Hi all,
How much sleep do you average and what is your optimal sleep time? I always read you should get 8. Lately I've been averaging 6 and that seems to be my ideal. If I go higher or lower I feel tired or sluggish. Just curious.

I would have to say my ideal is between 7 and 8 although lately I have been getting less than 7. I can function fine but I know I am not at my optimal. I have never tested it though. I just go by how I feel.
My hubby on the other hand needs 8-9 so it makes it difficult when we get less than that due to different commitments. It is something we are working on though.
There was an article on Lifehacker last month about testing your optimal sleep. It was really interesting.

I'm an insomniac, so it's hard to measure my ideal. Last night, I was asleep by 10:30, but woke up(wide awake) at 1 and read for an hours. Then I went back to sleep until 5:30. That's 5.5 hours? Definitely not my ideal.

7 to 8 works for me. I've tried going on 6 to 6.5 hours for extended periods of time and it was not good for me. Those that can get away with so little sleep and feel supercharged are lucky! For the rest of us, whatever your ideal amount of sleep is, it's important to get it. It's not a badge of honor to shortchange sleep daily to get things done!

I'm at my best at 7-8 hours/night. The baby and the constant interruption has been quite bad for me. I feel like I'm dragging around all day and doesn't have any energy.

I am right there with you. It seems like a dream now to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night consistently. Last night my husband and I went to sleep at 11 p.m. and our middle child woke up at 4:30 a.m. and was ready to go. We would just let her stay in her room, but she shares the room with her brother and he needs sleep. She always wakes up around 5 a.m. The only way to solve the problem is to go to bed earlier, but then we can't get all of our work done. :)

Ugh, I have an awful time with sleep. Always have. I usually sleep around 5 hours/night during the week and closer to 7 on weekends. And I constantly feel like crap as a result. My problem is that I am extremely sleepy from about 4-8pm, but wide awake after that until at least midnight. I guess my circadian rhythm is off or something.
I got a prescription for Ambien last month and it definitely makes me fall asleep, but I still only stay down for about 6 hours. On the rare occasions when I get 8 hours of sleep, I feel amazing. Just wish there wad a way to do it more consistently.

My ideal would be between 10 and 12 hours. However, I only get about 5.

That is quite a bit off from your ideal. Maybe you need to see if you can change any of your routines to fit in at least a couple more hours.

Hi Miss T,
That would be challenging if two partners had radically different sleep patterns. Thanks will hunt down that Lifehacker article!

Hey Jason,
Sometimes I can't sleep straight through. Doesn't happen too often, but then it turns out to be two or three naps. What is better for you? 5.5 of straight sleep or 5.5 hours of two or three naps?

Hey Squirrelers,
You're so right about not using little sleep as a badge of honor. When I was younger, I thought I was a tough guy for getting by on 4. Nowadays I'll rather much take the sleep than to have bragging rights.

I almost never sleep straight through an entire night. When I do, it's wonderful and better than short stretches.

We make it work. In most cases I lay and read for a while which is good R and R for me anyway. I am not so good and sitting around and taking a break.

The only thing I could think of is to sell my websites! But then I'd still have to offline business and teaching at my church to worry about.
My wife is going to start helping out a lot with the site next week, so hopefully, I'll be able to get more sleep.

Hey RB40,
When the baby came, how much sleep were you getting? Is it better now that the baby is older?

Hey Aaron,
I was addicted to WordPress, too! Many late nights, but 6 hours is actually pretty good for a blogging addict.

Hey Melissa,
Sounds like when the kids come, sleep goes out the window. I'm sure the Kodak moments more than balance out the lack of ideal sleep.

Hi Andrea,
When 4 to 8 hits, would you consider a nap? Sometimes if I'm dragging a short power nap recharges me just enough. Funny as I am getting older, the length of my power nap is also growing.
