Hi Andrea,
When 4 to 8 hits, would you consider a nap? Sometimes if I'm dragging a short power nap recharges me just enough. Funny as I am getting older, the length of my power nap is also growing.
I used to take a nap for 45 minutes or so, but then I had even more trouble falling asleep at night. I'm hoping the sleep problems have been work related (first working too many hours; now adjusting to a different schedule) and will work themselves out soon.

Thankfully our 3 children are sleeping independently through the night, so while I appreciate your pain Joe, I am glad to be past that stage.
I need a solid 8, or 7 and an afternoon power-nap. Any less and I become a little grumpy.

Hi Khaleef,
10 to 12? Wow, that's like a mini vacation! Sometimes I catch up on the weekend and hit the 10 hour mark, but I noticed I actually get sluggish. Like Miss T said, you have quite a large gap, but I totally understand, there's so much to do and so little time! Have to find that perfect balance.

Hey Jason,
Maybe you should try meditation. Perhaps there's too many thoughts racing through your mind that prevents the straight through sleep.

Hey Miss T,
Sounds like your sleep routine is pretty relaxing overall. Going to bed with a clear mind, I find the sleep most restful!

Hi Andrea,
Yeah I fear that, too. Not being able to sleep regularly because of a nap. But there are times when a short nap really hits the spot and I don't suffer later. Which reminds me, I should really try and figure it out so I can repeat it if needed.

Wouldn't want a grumpy Hunter! At what age did the kids turn sleep independent? Just curious.

Hey RB40,
When the baby came, how much sleep were you getting? Is it better now that the baby is older?
We probably got 5-6 hours of constantly interrupted sleep when baby first joined us. Now we get 6-7 hours with a lot less interruption.
He got sick a few times since he went to day care though and he is up a lot more often when he is feeling crappy. Now he is turning over and waking himself up every 45 minutes or so. I guess it is getting better, but we are still sleep deprived…

For me I have to get 7-8 hours a night to have enough energy. I do take naps on the weekends often. This gets me fully refreshed for the week ahead.

Who's focused enough to meditate when they wake up at 1am?
Too many thoughts? Definitely. Unless I am "fall over" tired, I have to fall asleep watching something on TV to give my mind something to focus on other than all of the projects I'm working on.
Grr. Last night, I woke up at 1 and didn't get back to sleep until after Married With Children came on at 4.

I would say I average 6-7 hours a night, but I really need 9 hours on a regular basis to feel rested. So I'm nowhere near my ideal.

When my oldest was little(1-2 months), he'd wake up once an hour to get a bottle, which he'd down in 5-10 minutes. That was hard. I was working 12 hour graveyard shifts. When I got home, I'd take him for 4-5 hours so my wife could get some uninterrupted sleep.
We had to start him on cereal by 6 weeks, just to get him full enough to take a nap. It was against every recommendation, but when our regular doctor got back from her maternity leave, she agreed we did the right thing. Now, at 11, the kid is 5'9" and strong enough that he'll probably be a varsity wrestler this winter (league stops at 8th grade).

Interesting question.
In college I had my ideal sleeptime down PAT. I would sleep for 7 hours a night, and feel completely refreshed and make it easily through the next day. It was fantastic!
Being married has changed my sleep patterns for the worst (I guess that's what I get for being so darn happy:)). My husband is a night person and I am a morning person. He likes to hang out late at night on Fridays and Saturdays in the livingroom and have a few beers, which causes him to snore. And he is a deep sleeper and I am a light sleeper. It can be SOOOOO frustrating. Just last night I was snored out to the couch at 1:30 in the morning, then woken up again at 5:00 a.m.. Yuck!

I fee great with 6 hours if I am exercising every other day and not eating carbs or sugar before bed. but otherwise I need 8.

@Buck – Our older two have always been fairly independent sleepers. However, our youngest, being the baby, was allowed to wander into our room and hop in between us in the middle of the night on a regular basis. We didn't mind that much, but that habit did take some breaking.

My ideal would be between 10 and 12 hours. However, I only get about 5.
That is quite a bit off from your ideal. Maybe you need to see if you can change any of your routines to fit in at least a couple more hours.
The only thing I could think of is to sell my websites! But then I'd still have to offline business and teaching at my church to worry about.
My wife is going to start helping out a lot with the site next week, so hopefully, I'll be able to get more sleep.
Good to hear. Your health is important too.

As I get older, I seem to get less sleep. I seem to average 6-7 hours a night.

Great point, FSYA. I've noticed that avoiding sugar before bed helps me get a better night sleep and more refreshed the next day. Also, exercise helps too. Still need 7 or 8 hours though:)

Hey Jason–have you ever tried hypnosis? I did it for several months for another health issue, and she gave me CDs. Whenever I pop one in at night I fall asleep crazy fast. I'm sure you can purchase some anywhere.

There are also apps for your smart phone that work well. I have tried them in the past. Massage and yoga are also good for getting you in the relaxed state to sleep.
