The basic idea is that as we progress through the unwinding of toxic assets, wealth will vaporize into lower layers, commodity money such as gold/silver being the lowest layer of all. He proposes using these commodities to evaluate how your other investments are doing; i.e. to use gold as the numeraire rather than the dollar.

 

This is the kind of topic that can attract both a lot of commentary as well as a lot of dissent due to its controversial nature (since gold bugs live in cabins in the woods with shotguns, right? ). I haven't gotten too many comments on it yet, but the way I learn is by engaging with the readers and seeing what they have to say. This is one topic I am trying to further my own understanding on, as well as spread awareness to others since I think it's important we at least think a bit about these things given all the crap going on in the economy. A little bit of friendly debate is how you further your own understanding on issues; at least, that's what I believe. So, please come by, leave a comment or flame if you prefer…
