Register with namecheap and private registration is free.
Or get a PO box and use that as the domain's registration address.

I used to pay for it, but I don't worry about it anymore. I'm no longer anonymous, so pretty much anyone can find me if they really want to.

I don't know why they charge a fee to hide it. That should be free.

my provider gives the option of keeping my info "private" and just populates the fields with their info, but I don't believe they charge a separate fee for that.

I do.
That said, I'm anonymous because of where I work (large financial firm), but you already have your name in your blog (I'm guessing), so why pay to keep it private?

Hmm, that's kind of a clever way around the issue… Great idea :)

Go Daddy charges a fee for private registration. Probably because they can. Since I'm not anonymous and I have a P.O. box there isn't really any reason to hide my information.

I don't, but then we aren't anonymous. If you are or want to be then it is worth going out of your way to hide your 'who is' information

Even if you don't hide it for your blogs, do you hide it for your niche sites?

I will have to look into this. I am not sure what my host does. Thanks for the thread.

I hide my personal data out of my registration. It used to be indexed in so many places and started to dominate google searches when someone googled my name. So I converted all my domains to proxy. It is still there in one of the domains I gave up, but that is only because I changed it but this place has an old copy. We moved away from that place, so I didn't really spend too much time to make them take it down.
That is my reason anyway. I want my professional profile/accomplishments to come on the first page when someone googled me, not my hobby.

I try to hide it but I realized that Dynadot doesn't hide your name, so I'm going to be moving a couple of domains. That said, the info is only hidden from casual onlookers but not anyone who really wants to know, as these other companies will give you up right away if served with some notice.

I think it's still there in the WHOIS history? But it seems most sites charge to access that.

Good idea Suba. I am working on making sure the same thing happens for me.

This is kind of a weird thing for me. My whois is hidden on MoneyMamba, but not all sites. I would favor hiding whois information, but definitely see if there's a way to keep some kind of contact information in the Whois.
The reason I say that is you never know who is using WhoIs to find contact information. One day, I got an email from a media rep at a $200M+ public company to an email listed in Whois and nowhere else. We ended up making a deal, and they've been great partners.
But the thing is I don't have any way to say it would have happened without the Whois listing. Sure, I had a contact page and all that jazz, but they still hit me through Whois. Maybe if it was unlisted they wouldn't have found me? I can't say for sure.

I always keep an eye out on Slickdeals for GoDaddy deals, and every once in a while they'll have one where you can get private registration for dirt cheap. It's definitely worth it but don't pay full price.
