Hey everyone,
I'm wondering how you use twitter? I'll show my age here and confess that I only check twitter on my computers.
This way I'm not inundated with messages all day. Do you send all the twitter messages to your cell phone?

Twitter is a great API with basic UI. Download twitter apps for iPhone (twitbird I use) and computer (hootsuite I use). Don't bother to open main twitter stream. Create a list of people you want to listen to and then follow that list. Itr would be smoother that way.

Lol. I don't really use twitter much (even though I have like 50 something followers).

I have a Twitter app for my phone, but I only get notifications if someone mentions me specifically. That way I don't feel pressured to keep up with what's going on all the time – I follow way too many people to read everything! If my phone beeps and I don't have time to respond right then, I just wait until later or until I get home.
A lot of people will say that Twitter isn't very useful, but it's my top source of referral traffic. The more consistently active you are, the more it will benefit you. Of course you may not be interested in doing any more than you are now, but the option is always there.

I only use Twitter to let followers know about new posts. I find if I do it too often, I lose followers.

I use Hootsuite to manage my Twitter accounts. Once in a while I'll use my phone, but that's only if I need to do something immediately.
I do have it set up to send me emails if I am mentioned or I receive a direct message.

That's one of the things I realized – if you only use it for links to posts, a lot of people will unfollow (especially if the tweets are automated and your account spits out a bunch at a time). The more conversations you have with followers, the more you'll keep. As I said before, I know a lot of people aren't into that, but I feel like I finally figured out how to make it work. When I have time, I visit my new followers' profiles and comment on something they've said recently. I don't always follow everyone who follows me; if they're just interested in numbers, I don't want to follow them anyway.

Thanks for asking the question, retireby40. I much prefer Facebook over Twitter. I only have my posts go there automatically. I know I have to get better at "conversing" on there, but it just feels awkward!

I really don't use Twitter all the much, and for the most part I only send out a Tweet when I have a new post. But, lately, I have posted some comments on my Facebook page that automatically get's tweeted as well. There's normally quite a response and then I tweet back with my cell phone. It has been pretty fun and I think my readers like the interaction! You should try it!

I use twitter as a method for showing appreciation to the other financial blogs I read. To connect with my followers/readers on more personal level. To promote odd/new blogs.

I love twitter but it can eat up a lot of time (at least for me). I use it to promote others, share new posts and sometimes just converse!

All great comments on twitter. Using twitter on a smartphone… it's best to use the Twitter app. I only get alerted when I was mentioned by someone. It's not very disruptive that way.

That's a big thing. Many people don't want to have twitter as a "notification service", as that's what rss and email subs are for from what I've read. People want to interact, and have that immediate (somewhat) response to the people they communicate with. It's a good tool for promoting as well, but I think you need to have a mix of everything to keep people engaged and interested.
Personally, I tweet new posts, promote others' posts, and use it to communicate with other people. I have hootsuite on my phone for when I'm sitting around somewhere and feel like jumping into something, and I use the website when I'm at a desktop for convenience.

I love twitter. I don't really use it to promote my website, I tend just to use it to follow people that I find interesting

Looks like I might be the odd ball in this thread. I'm a Twitter fiend! I've been using it since 2009 and I love it. At one point, I was obsessed with it. I didn't start using it for my blog until the beginning of the year though. I use it to have conversations with followers and people I'm following, I use it to get news on interesting things, finding cool links, and THEN promoting my blog posts. If you make some genuine conversation, the followers will…well…follow! I participate in Twitter chats, which are a lot of fun. I have had Twitter apps on all 3 major smartphones (UberTwitter, TwitDroyd, Echophon, Hootsuite, official Twitter apps, etc). I use Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, and used to use CoTweet.
It's a great tool for finding out information and letting your followers know about things too. My best advice is to not let Twitter be a selfish tool. You have to give and THEN receive.

I spend about 15 minutes a day on Twitter. Replying to @'s, thanking RT's, and RT fellow Yakezie and other interesting tweets.
I've never really been a fan of chat because I can't multi task when I chat so I try to keep the time on there to a min.

I would like to learn more about Twitter. I have one but I'm not seeing being much useful at this point. Can you explain more about what you did to make it top source of referral?
