Hey guys,

Been blogging away for a few months.  Been a great ride like everyone said!  Laugh  So I was wondering, besides Crystal the Terminator of Blogging Smile, what is your ideal future state to be in?

Eventually blog full time?

or

Status quo, go up your career ladder and grow your blog side by side?

Thanks! Cool

If I could somehow drive our blog to earn $30k a year I think I could find bliss.  My line of work offers up some contractual opportunities where, realistically, given my experience and knowledge of the client business, add another $40-$60k to our income, but i'd only work 4 months of the year on contract.  I can also configure my work where I only need to be in the office 2 days a week as a consultant.

Mrs. SPF would continue w/ her employer, earning a very stable pension and very nice salary, we'd have health benefits (yes, they are nice to have even here in Canada for things like dentist appts and vision stuff).

I'd love to be a stay at home Dad.

Mrs. SPF likes the company of adults/other people much more than I so this would work out great for us.  In the city we live in we'd be extremely comfortable with no financial worries, and, we'd attain our goal where we retire 20 years from now.

I guess this is more of a realistic dream than an ideal dream – didn't mean to hi-jack, but seriously, if we could get income from our writing and I work part time and stay home w/ kids doing house stuff (i'm also a carpenter and a fine cook/cleaner!) we'd be happy – and I think being happy is ideal.

edit: heck, if I could pull in that much (and adjust for inflation) after write offs Mrs. SPF could retire too.  Her employment would be gravy for us, and a lot of gravy!

I still enjoy my profession and like to deal with people in person.

I know i'm good at my day job – the clients tell me this regularly. They're releived to deal with me instead of the project manager who has different objectives than I do.  I really do enjoy what I do as I get to learn a TON about stuff I like.  I'd just prefer to not do it full time.

I really like my job at the moment, but things do tend to change.  I see myself with my current employer for the forseeable future.

For me, blogging is purely a hobby.  Right now I have no ads of any kind on my blog (mind you, it's less than 2 weeks old).  If I find I am able to stay comitted to writing posts and I am able to get some reasonable readership, I may go ahead and look to monetizing the blog, but I don't see that happening for quite a while.

I do really enjoy peoples posts where they are open about their traffic numbers and their revenue the site is generating.  Blogging does seem like it can be quite lucrative for some people.

Been there, done that.

Seemed nice at the time and have a lot of great memories, but I so wasn't cut out for 7 till 7 child minding, cooking, cleaning, washing etc etc. It turns out its not all playing catch in the back yard. I love my kids, don't get me wrong, but they can be a complete pain in the ass Yell. I actually find working a lot more satisfying (maybe I'm more like Mrs SPF). That allows me to come home and spend some proper, real, quality time with time in the evenings, before work and on weekends. Because we have 2 incomes, it also means we can do things like take month long trips to Europe, go skiiing and have a nice house.

So my dream – just to blog and see what happens. If it makes some cash – great. If not, no bother.

Hey SPF,

Looks like I struck a chord with you.  Sounds like you're very passionate about this ideal state, I'm sure you'll get there! Laugh

I was just wondering myself, I kind of like things right now, running in parallel.  If things take off, they take off.  At least I still have my day job.  Smile  I can't take all the credit for this topic.  I forgot there is a similar one in Lifestyle.  A lot of other comments there…  I usually just click here and momentarily forgot about the other forum.  Plus I like to hear from everyone else and where their head is at. Hey Jim,

Interesting view.  Funny, maybe it's human nature to have a counterpoint to make us apperciate it even more?  Work so we enjoy vacations and quality time more?  I've heard some pretty unhappy retired folks because they almost have too much time on their hands.

@uhnw oh I understand the dirty side.  A ton of the tasks Mrs. SPF takes on now + feeding, poop, diapers, play dates, drool

and then, vacuuming, laundry,  dusting, dishes, cat litter etc etc etc etc.

We'd need some day care when i'd have to consult, but I think the plan is manageable.

Of course it would be ideal to do nothing but blog.  But I think our goal is realistic, and attainable.  Either myself, Mrs. SPF or some day care / nursery school worker is going to need to perform these functions.  If one of us can work from home and maintain our income with young children, perfect IMO.  With 3 cats and a dog we've already trained ourselves to not smell out of our noses.  A unique talent.

Idealy, I would like to make $1,000 a month from the blog, but $600 would be ok.

I'd be retired from the corporate job, blog, be a landlord, be a part time stay at home dad and take on another one or two part time side gig.

I think that will keep me busy enough. Cool

I'm quite like Jaymus – purely a hobby. Jaymus, when I started out, I was pretty much like you – really didn't care about ads. Revenue is nice, but not hung up on it.

Good mindset.  Kind of like a hobby for me, too.  Nice creative outlet to balance with work.  However, hard to ignore all the income and stat updates which makes me wonder, "Hmmm, what if?" Laugh

Ideal future state is financial independence. This probably means low debt and decent side income. It doesn't mean I would just stop working and go lounge on a beach, but if I wanted to, I wouldn't have to worry too much about the bills. It would also make it easier to focus more on online income and things like that!

Financial independence…  Ah, one day for us all!  What is that saying, Living in Abundance?  I guess the key is not being super filthy rich, but getting to the point of not having to worry about money, Paradise Found. Laugh

I need to be debt free with adequate savings, and blogging/working on my business full-time. I would do financial consulting, tax preparation, writing, and seminars full time. Then I would probably go back to school to study theology.

The Terminator of Blogging says "If I can make more than $30,000 a year blogging, scre…ummm..bye-bye 'real' work!"  :-D

Seriously though, I will blog whether it makes me money or not…I just put more time into the extra stuff (like 20 plus hours a week on these forums) since I'm trying to make it into a full time job.  I cannot think of a job in the world that would make me happier.  Even if we won the lottery tomorrow, I'd probably start a travel blog, lol.  It's just so much fun!
