Hi guys, I just got offered a new job with higher pay along with more opportunities for advancement and still close to home so I'm excited. However, at the same time I have this anxiety and fear coming over me.

I've been at the current position for almost 5 years now so I'm quite comfortable here but not being able to move up anytime soon and seeing new people coming in at a higher position is really discouraging. They've move up people who started after 2 months just because he was the Boss's neighbor.

So one part of me is excited to move on but the other is afraid. Afraid I might not live up to their expectations and get fired.  How do you guys cope with this? is it normal?

Anytime you move from one job to another you are going to feel at least somewhat nervous. When I left E&Y, I was stressed beyond belief. Did I know enough to be a Controller of a small company? Would I fit in with the established culture? The list of concerns was (and still is) infinite.

What I did was to simply focus on me. How can I be a great employee? What skills do I need to make it easier for my staff to succeed?

There is always a chance of getting fired…there is also the chance to get promoted and finally find that career you have been dreaming about.

I almost passed on my current job which has turned out to be the biggest blessing of my life (with respects to my career, that is…)

Good luck!

Dustin

That is wonderfully exciting, Aaron, congratulations! I would say, perfectly normal to doubt yourself, and change is scary enough to give anyone the jitters. But by this time next year, you will be settled comfortably into your new position and doing a rad job, I'm sure. Focus on where you want to be and enjoy the journey.

Totally normal and actually good.  The stress and worry you are feeling will propel you to work harder at figuring out the new environment and doing well in it.

People don't like change. It's completely normal.

I'm confident the new job will be better and you'll continue moving up.

I'm sure you'll be fine!  You should read Cal Newport's new book So Good They Can't Ignore You.  It should allay some of the fears you are having =)

I did a theater show in Atlantic City for 6 months and I was hired to be the swing dancer (replacement). I joined the production late in the game and was still learning the numbers when the show opened. 3 days in someone injured themselves and I had to go out there and perform. I don't think I got one piece of the choreography right but I survived and was hired full time.

You can do it.

For me, the worst part of stating a new job is all the new people I have to meet!

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon
