New Challenge… Mainly with Doubters

Hi Guys,

I'm embarking on the Yakezie challenge and as well as following the appropriate requests (Yakezie logo, Alexa ranking etc) I decided to tell my friends and family about the challenge and my website.  It's exciting but also a nervous experience in sharing my experiences of personal finance, especially as many of these experiences are pitfalls Embarassed.

One response I wasn't expecting was friends and family to ask the question "why bother?". It really took me back because sharing my mistakes, not matter how difficult, was something I always promised I'd do. Many people don't think sharing information on a blog will make a difference, but I believe differently.

I wondered if anybody else on the Yakezie network had experienced doubters, or perhaps you had your own doubts about your finance website? I'm still super motivated, it's a response I didn't expect and when I digest it i'm sure I'll write about it on my blog.

Hi Lance

Thanks very much! I appreciate your comments and offer of support.

It's more for me and I'm sure they just don't understand, as opposed to being malicious.

Thanks again!

I once had people smirk at me when I told them I blogged about personal finance on the side… but ive helped some people along the way, and I also bring in a pretty nice side income while doing so… those same smirkers have now inquired about how they can start their own blog lol.  Unfortunately, nobody ever sticks with it long enough!

Hi John,

Do what makes you happy.  I would have been surprised by that reaction too.  Good luck with the challenge.  If you stick it out, it is very worthwhile.  You learn a lot, build many relationships, and you grow as a person and a writer.

Hi Justin,

Way to prove your doubters wrong, haha!

Frugal Portland,

Your new website is really cool, good luck with it, I'll be sure to keep checking in! What you wrote about on your website is 100% accurate to what happened to me. You tell one person and they can taint something innocent and damage it to a point where you question why and from whom you're doing it.

Lesson learned :-)

If you have doubters that means you're leading an open and honest life! Everyone has an opinion about something and will freely share. And when someone says "why bother?" one of the best responses is "because it's important to me." It tells them it may not be worth the effort to them, but you will not be deterred.

An excellent point Andi. It's been a great experience being part of the Yakezie forum… I'm loving it. Plus, i'm getting to read so many interesting blog posts!

Sharing information which is sensitive is always difficult to do and some people don't understand why I want to do it. I'm sure they will one day.

One time I was walking down the street and some lady made a rude comment about how I shouldn't let my 1 year old daughter cry.

I went up to her and said don't tease me with your genius advice please provide your telephone number so I can inquire about other topics for the next 17 years.

It's good to take some advice… SOME

Hi Jaicatalno

I generally agree, advice can help you stop making foolish mistakes. It's an interesting point you raise about parenting. As they say, there isn't a handbook on how to be a good parent – everybody does it differently. It's the same in life. What one person will do in a situation may not be the same as another.

I'm an optimist, work hard and believe life will work out and in the end it'll generally be OK. Pessimism doesn't sit well with me. Life's too short to be negative!

Well, the only doubter I've come across is an aunt who said that I'm being dishonest. When I asked what the heck that meant, she said that because I'm anonymous on my site that that's somehow dishonest (??). She couldn't understand why I wanted to add more "junk" to the internet and tell people about stuff they don't need to know. I tried to tell her that I explain the blue collar world to people, and I offer tips for DIY work that they might want to do, and selfishly, I'm learning about the internet, and websites, and how SEO works.  SHe was not satisifed. And so dude, when you get doubters, just shrug 'em off, everyone's allowed their opinion.

John, I know what you mean when you say it is mostly for you. I started my blog to really analyze my own terrible money management. One of my friends said I am always talking about my mistakes on my blog. Well yeah! My blog is not my resume or a career-builder. I am analyzing the best ways to understand money and use it as a tool and not stay broke forever. I also get to hone my writing skills and learn how to do something consistently (I've been blogging for almost 15 months now!) and that is a big deal for me. So don't worry about doubters because there are plenty of people who will tell you not to do something. But if you are doing it for yourself and to put some information out there that you think is valuable, and then you will be happy, go for it!

Hey TB! Good advice mate. Your aunt could be part of my family… are we related? :-) Some people don't understand how it works and I'm sure over time they will get it. If not, their loss!

Welcome to the challenge and good luck! The only people who know we blog are Holly, myself, and Holly's mom. It isn't that we are afraid of doubters, but it helps us to be able to be completely open about what we say. I'm sure it will only be a matter of time until people find out though:)

Hello John!

The vast majority of people who question your motives do so because your decision makes them uncomfortable. It's not about you, really. It's about their comfort zone – you've disrupted their homeostasis. When someone they know makes a big change in their professional or personal life- it often causes them to feel anxiety and stress.

If your actions challenge their decisions, opinions or beliefs about what is right, fair, appropriate, etc. – they can't help but respond the way they do. They do it to make you question yourself and, hopefully, go back to what they consider "normal" behavior.

But when you know why they're acting the way they are toward you, it doesn't have such an impact. You can just shrug it off and keep moving forward.

Have FUN!
