So I have my gmail set up for Super Frugalette and I try to keep it "cleaned up". I also have my dumping email account where I filter my "good email" as well. Hence, I there is a chunk of my time being devoted to deleting email. Which brings me to my thought…the "auto comment" I get from commenting on blogs…I find to be a waste of email space. It has become a really big pet peeve for me.
Do you all like receiving "auto comments"? Am I missing some key aspect of the "auto comment" feature?

I'm with you that those comments don't add value. I do like comments back and forth and getting to know other bloggers. That said, the auto comment doesn't help in that regard because it's just that – an auto comment. I suggest that people who have them consider scrapping them.

I started using the autocomment a few months ago, but I didn't pay any attention to the set-up. Luckily, after repeated emails, one of my blogger friends told me to change my settings to allow only one comment to be sent to each email address. I set this up, and I think that it now holds so much more value. My repeat commenters are no longer being spammed with my emails and the first-time commenter is feeling the love from my site and might make another appearance because of it. :)

I agree. These e-mails drive me crazy. I saw one that popped up after my first comment on a blog; I liked that better than getting an e-mail.

I liked the idea but didn't like the spammy feel, so I still have them sent to 1st time commenters but I explain that they are automated and let them know that I would love to talk for real. Please let me know if my 1st time commenter email ever annoyed you – it really is just a way for me to say thank you and let you know how to contact me at any time.

I don't like the auto comment either. It's too much email. ;)

I can't stand it, though I do like Crystal's approach of telling the reader that it is automated. I don't like those automated direct messages on Twitter, either.

I'm going to have to disagree with everyone here because I've had some commentators personally thank me after they get the follow-up email! The thing is though I have set it to send out only one email per commentator, and that's the first time. They don't get bothered after that. ;)

Just out of curiosity, do they ever thank you if you directly respond to their comment?

This does happen on occasion. It usually happens when I have a "stranger" commentator that I don't know and then they have a pretty detailed comment and I respond. Sometimes the correspondence has gone to email after that.

I really, really dont care for them. Some have them set up well, but most are annoying. I try to write a personal email to everyone that has commented on my site over the past 5 days, but I've gotten way behind. Its unfortunate too, because I really enjoyed that.

I am not a fan of the auto comment feature either.

Can't stand it. If a blogger wants to send me an email I much prefer a personal email.

I actually like the first email I get thanking me for commenting. It also helps me remember where I was in cyberspace. (Is that an 80's term?)

I have them set up to send to first time commentors only.
