Hey guys,

Anyone know of good articles to read up on self employed retirement plans?  Wanted to help a buddy out.

Thanks!

The IRS information is pretty good:

I went through this process a couple years ago and opted for a solo 401k since it allowed me to defer the most income. Other options would include a SEP or SIMPLE IRA which are a little easier to set up.  I needed an EIN as a sole proprietor to set up the Solo 401k but the whole process took maybe 5hrs with Fidelity.

Thanks!  I'll check out the PDF.  I have a pretty good handle on my retirement options.  But since I don't have my own biz, it's like another world.  Getting a little overwhelmed with Solo 401k, SEP, Simple, Keough. Yell Thanks for the help!

Also keep in mind, if you deposit enough in a pre-tax account it may make you eligible for a Roth IRA, if you were not eligible prior.

Jeff from Good Financial Cents did a guest article for me on the subject:

I think your article was a good starting point, and I have to agree that the IRS is a phenomenal resource for the latest rules on these plans. The trick is to know which plan to search for in the first place, there are lots of options.

Feel free to ask me if you got any questions.   I set up a SEP IRA for me but may move to a Solo 401k next year.  I've also helped clients set up Simple IRA's and traditional 401k's.   It's not a big piece of my business, but I know enough to be dangerous. Wink
