Hi all,
Not sure if this is the right place to post, but wanted to see what the veteran Yakezie members thought about using Wordpress to host your blog or setting up shop at a self hosted company. Pros and cons? After days of unbelievable gains on Alexa, I'm thinking I need my own domain name. For those of you who went through this, do you have to start again from scratch or does your Alexa ranking transfer over? Sorry a total newbie. Thanks again for all the support and advice!

I've been on self hosted wordpress for almost the entirety of my blogging career. Only a very short stint of a few months on blogger.com.
As far as I know, when you do your own domain, the alexa will essentially start over. As will pagerank and mozrank. But, in my opinion, the added control over the system and the ownership of the name make up for that eventually.

BeatingBroke is correct. When you change the domain you lose your inbound links. However, USE SELF HOSTED WORDPRESS! It is 100% worth the up front cost if you have any serious goals with your site. Move now so you don't lose future momentum. Let me know if you need help with anything. E-mail may be best for that.

I started with Blogger in February and switched to Wordpress by April and would never go back. Yes, your Alexa will start from scratch, but it will plummet way faster and the trackback feature alone pays off. Good luck!

I started with wordpress and switched over to self hosted within the month from the advice of Yakezie members. You'll start over, but it's better to do it sooner rather than later. You can see how my Alexa rank is progressing on my page. The tab on top – Alexa Rank.
The cost is not that much either.
Khaleef wrote about a discount at HostGator, it might have been just Cyber Monday though.

Good luck!

Self hosted is so much better. I have two Blogger blogs and they are so limited as to their capabilities. My self hosted blog outperforms them all and has so much more upside potential than those two. I will have to switch to self hosting for those two if I want to grow them further.

I was in your boat. My Alexa was improving when I decided to switch. So, I switched and my Alexa sky rocketed to 15 MIL from about 700K! It took about three weeks to get it where I left off. Other than that – switching to self hosted website was the best decision I ever made.

Thanks for posting the article with my affiliate link! I agree 100% with everyone else – self hosted is what you want if you have any plans for your site. Move now and get the Yakezie momentum to push you back down in Alexa! The 50% off deal with Hostgator was only for Cyber Monday, but if you use the code "KNSFINANCIAL" (no quotes), then you will save $9.94 from whatever package you choose.
Don't feel pressured to use it, I just wanted you to have an alternative since the Cyber Monday deal ended. But no matter who you choose for hosting, I think you should make the move as soon as possible.

Good info here. Just remember that the longer you wait, the longer potential work that buy yourself into when you see the amount of resources that you can start adding to your wordpress account once you go to wordpress.org.
When I was on blogger, I had paid for my own domain name earlier in my blogging "career". It's only $10 a year through Enom. So when I shifted the other day, my Alexa ranking did not change. In fact, it went down a couple of hundred thousand, which tells me that the Alexa ranking is tied not to your blog per se' but to your domain name.
Good luck!

Ranking is based on your URL.

Self-hosting requires more work for sure but the amount of control and other benefits outweigh the work involved.

Your own domain name is a must. Self-hosting is less of a must, but I highly recommend it. Wordpress and others have been known to pull the carpet out from under blogs from time to time.

Self hosted Wordpress is always the best option. And it's easiest to do in the beginning. The longer you wait to switch the harder/more complicated it is.

Good Job, Buck. Trust me, you are going to save lots of time. I have about a weekends worth of QA to do over my site's link now that I've finally transitioned from Blogger to Wordpress.

Romeo, moneysmarts, and Mark,
Thanks, things have been going well. Learning more about WordPress and tweaking where I can. So many things to consider, so little time!
