Hey Andi, personally I do not find it offensive, and actually am more prone to read more into a post with a title with huge shock value. My philosophy has always been as long as its tactful and tasteful its should be fine, and its always good when its cover with a veil of humor. I have seen shoemoney and others use it without blow back, and I myself every now and then.  Never much negative feed back, and hey you may see a spike in viewers because of it. – Gene

I didn't even think of the positive effect, that it may catch people's attention.

I love profanity if used in the right way. Almost like a George Carlin way. Other than that I close it down. Not too off putting for me. It's not like it says Damn I am F***ing Good.

I adore George Carlin. I think you just inspired a post, life lessons from George Carlin. ;)

I recently wrote a post entitled "I Am The Neighborhood Bitch. And I'm Fine With It" It's one of my most commented nongiveaway posts to date.

I was originally hesitant to use that title. But I realized that it was appropriate for the content of the post so I went with it. I think that the majority of readers are not going to be put off by the occasional use of profanity.

I appreciate that you understand the hesitancy. I've just been having a major should I or shouldn't I debate, but I do think it's appropriate, maybe even foundational for my content. Thank you.

I don't mind cursing in blog posts but I think it should be done with changing at least one of the letters.  Many people, right or wrong, read blog posts at work, and depending on how strict your IT department is, a curse word could get someone flagged as browsing sites that they shouldn't.  Personal blogs where people just rant about their daily life, that's fine, but I admittedly get a little perturbed when I see an f-bomb dropped in a personal finance blog post.

I could always photoshop an @ into the mug, but I'm not sure it would be necessary. I don't know that IT departments would capture the picture, but it's a definite consideration for the text content.

BTW I totally want a mug that says that, it cracks me up!

I think the mug is 40 years old by now…at this point I'm very careful with it.

Personally, I lean the other way. If you're going to say "ass" then say it – stuff like @$$ drives me insane. If you're not comfortable enough to spell it out, maybe you should rethink it.

I have a horrible mouth in real life, which I try to tone down on my blog. But if a post calls for a word here and there, I don't shy away from it. Adults can handle it, especially something as innocuous as "damn."

One of my favorite lines from a movie about self-censoring was, "If you're going to curse, go for the gold." It doesn't make sense to say or do anything half-assed.

I think damn is barely considered profanity any more.  I rarely use profanity on my blog because I rarely use it in real life. If a post calls for it I will use it and I have no problem linking to blog posts with profanity in the title. One of my favorite blogs, Mr. Money Mustache, uses profanity in a humorous way that I find entertaining. I wouldn't shy away from using the coffee mug in the banner at all.

This morning my husband told me, "If you don't put God- in front of it, no one cares." Now I have to tell him he's right. ;)

I don't find it offensive, no matter how "bad" any particular word is.  Profanity is like a non-html <strong>tag, IMO.

I struggle with this a bit, but in no way, shape, or form do I feel that damn is profanity and I would not at all be offended by reading it.

I feel like my point is sometimes made better when I swear, which is probably a detriment rather than a good thing. Since my blog is much more personal rather than mechanical, I'm pretty candid on it – if I'm describing a difficult person, I'll call them an asshole. There are a few words I won't say – the obvious ones – but I do change a letter once in awhile because I never know what will offend people.

Not to pile on here, but a quick poll.  Show of hands is good. ;)  How many of you actually thought you'd be having this conversation when you first started blogging?

I sure didn't! I never thought adults would mind the occasional "shit" or "ass" in a post, so it didn't occur to me that threads like this were possible. Which says much more about me than anyone else.

One of the best personal finance blogs I read (MrMoneyMustache.com) is full of profanity. I personally find it funny, and it adds character/voice to his writing. I'd say go for it as well.

"Damn" is not profane to me. :)

That said, I will avoid stronger words like "fuck" or "shit" on my site.

Actually, profanity is one thing I love about blogging.  Not that I use it extensively, or hardly at all for that matter, but we bloggers have the freedom to do so if we choose.  Most of us don't have to answer to an editor or publisher.  We don't have to be politically correct.  We can write exactly how we speak in real life.  I don't mind a few F-bombs here and there.  In fact, I find blogs with subtle profanity to be more entertaining.  I think you should go ahead with your blog idea Andi… sound like a Damn Good Idea!

I'm generally not too offended by it, but for me it's very easy for me to be put off by it if it's too in your face or over the top.  A little doesn't bother me, but a lot of "f bombs" and general negativity does turn me off.  I find that the more cursing there is in a post, the more negativity there is also, and I HATE negativity.

I like that many bloggers do use profanity in their posts – it's another aspect of blogging that separates us from the boring style-guide conformity of reporting.  If you're profane in real life, why squelch yourself for the sake of a potentially offended reader?  You're more likely to pick up a reader who's refreshed by the fact you're realistic.

In my case?  I'm a hypocrite.  I swear more in real life than on my site (on DQYDJ we only swear by proxy, haha).  I started off writing that way and it's become a running joke at this point, since my co-writers and I will go out of our way to avoid swearing.  In fact, we have gotten to the point where people have noticed that we never swear and called us out on it (email, comments, etc.).  Pretty funny, stuff!

This is my feeling exactly. (And I also have a horrible mouth in real life.)  I don't swear at all on my blog though, but mostly because I'd have to put the little $#9! signs and that drives me crazy ;)

Thank you everyone! I had no idea this would be such a positive topic. The idea of self-censorship reducing your authenticity was an approach I hadn't thought of. Since I try not to cuss in real life, I'm going to try not to cuss on the blogs, but not be peeved if something slips by.
