Best conference story post I've read so far goes to Andrea! Very nice! http://www.sooverdebt.com/2011…..g-jd-roth/
HA! I loved that post, then again I love pretty much all her stuff!
As per some of the previous comments, I found that I needed more time to mingle. While there were "mingling" and speed networking events which were good, I found that it was usually really loud and crazy in the tent. I seemed to find people and enjoyed the conversations more in the hallways where it was a bit quieter and there weren't blocks of people. Then again, there might not be a way around that!
As for cost? I live in the city of Chicago so I spent about $200 for hotel, food and transportation (I got rides!)

Shannyn, Did really nobody twist JD's nipple for me per one of my tweets? Disappointing! JD, Sean Ogle and I met up for lunch in Portland the other month over some brainstorming.
Pretty lucky you live right in Chicago.

I was lucky to be given a ticket last minute after Red won from J$ but decided not to go. I rented a car since I have a '97 Grand Marquis and was not about to drive him across state lines. So with the car rental, hotel, cash, I was in under $350! I'm extremely happy about that.
I had an amazing time. It was the best blogger conference I've been to (ok I've only been to 2 but this was the best!). Everything was great, I can't even begin to process all of the information, even today.
My only cons were that, I'd like to see more topics that are specific to PF Bloggers, not just blogging. And the schedule was a bit tight on Saturday. I'd really have liked to hear from some of the speakers more, 25minutes just didn't give them enough time to really dive into a topic. Hopefully next year though.
And for next year, I'll go anywhere in the continental US. I've already started a seperate savings account just for FinCon12.

One good idea is to re-read the Yakezie Member Posts for those of you who met. It brings new perspective to everybody's story! I've been starting to read the alpha class of posts recently since it's been over a year now. http://yakezie.com/sections/al…..ber-posts/

It was great meeting all the Yakezie guys and gals that I was able to. I'm guessing there's about 10 of you that I never got to meet though, hope to next year!

@sam Yeah it was a random, throw your business card into the cage and hope you win, sort of drawing. Guess I got lucky! Loving it though.
@tom I think there were at least 5-10 that I missed as well. It was incredible meeting the ones I did meet though.

My 2 cents:
Great conference. Well organized-PT kept everything moving and on schedule which is unusual in my experience.
I agree the networking part was difficult in the tent-so loud I had to leave.
My only concern is with the post FINCON excitement-next years event will probably be super-crowded and will be difficult to meet people and really have a conversation.
For all the Yakezie members I didn't meet-make hopefully we'll get together next year-or at Sam's Yakezie gathering when it happens.
I too learned enough to make it worth going even if I didn't have fun-but we had a lot of fun!
Penzo was a jerk though, which surprised me.
Just kidding-we had a great time together-And don't tell him, my wife said he looked so young….

Sounds like it was a blast.
Hawaii would be awesome but then again it's not frugal, both from the standpoint of how expensive it is plus anybody who is dating/married will have their cost automatically double. Think about it :)

I live nearby and only had to spend the little bit on gas to get there plus the early registration fee, so it was less than $100 for me. Can't beat that.
Is there any word where it will be next time?
I don't think I ever met you. So sad.
I was looking forward to meeting you too!

Well if they cap the number of tickets sold next year like they did this year, then that probably won't be too big of a problem. Those interested in attending will just have to sign up all that much sooner!

I had a great time at the conference. I learned so much, and it was so awesome to meet all you yakezies, and I was totally bummed I couldnt stay and chat with more of you during the happy hour saturday.
I got a lot out of it too. Love the talks by baker, ramit and jd – learned great stuff about how to keep bad backlinks off my site and WP db maintaince plugins, which I"m going to put on the site sooner to make it run faster. Great talk about podcasting, and again, got to meet some great people.
Cost:
Flight 250
Hotel 82 – (My GF came along, so I didnt share a room)
Food: 55 – bought some in-town friends dinner sat night
Taxi 20 – ride to the metro (couldnt take me on the free shuttle, they were too busy)
Total cost ~400
and I didnt win an ipad like beating broke!

There were about 7 people from Denver (and South Wyoming) at the conference. That seemed like one of the biggest metro areas and we are way cheaper than NYC/Chicago/California. I am lobbying for Denver 2012!

Hello everyone!
Very cool experience. My overall cost was around $500 which includes flight, hotel, food, and taxi to and from airport.
I would like to give my experience some more thoughts before posting it here, but wanted to share on the cost.

I am finally home from Chicago. #FINCON11 was better than I could have ever imagined. I'll try to keep this recap short:
PRO's:
Location – I love Chicago. It is a city I can drive to (from Ohio) and it has plenty to do to keep just about anyone amused. And while I am talking about Chicago, I want to put a plug in for Davenport's Piano Bar's 'Nitz and Howe Experience' where I enjoyed one of the funnest entertainment experiences I have had in a long time.
The People – Meeting 'the people behind the blogs' was single-handedly the best part about attending the conference… I am only sorry that I didn't get to meet every Yakezie member who attended. The warmth I felt from you all was simply amazing.
The Knowledge – The ticket paid for itself in probably the first 15 minutes of sessions! I was especially interested in what Baker and Donna Freedman had to say and they certainly didn't disappoint!
CON:
There was just simply not enough time. Too often I felt I had to choose between attending a session or networking.
My costs (approx.) for the conference:
Conference Ticket – $89
Hotel – $180
Gas – $90 (plus a $25 free gas card I had)
Tolls – $25 (half my tolls were free – woot – I'll be writing about this on my site soon)
Food (during conference time of the trip) – $20
Of course, since I tacked a vacation on to this I had plenty of other expenses. :)
All in all, it was one of the best conferences I've attended. I'm already excited about next year's event!

Sandy–bummer–room internet was actually free! Kylie Ofiu showed me how (it looked like you would have to pay, but you didn't have to after you put your room number in). Sorry I couldn't have helped you there!
I would also love to see Sam give a presentation about the Yakezie, though I understand that he may not be able to.

My take on the conference:
Absolutely awesome. Period.
Meeting people I previously only knew through their blog/twitter/Yakezie was both wonderful and weird! We all had fun giggling over how we thought someone was going to look like and how they surprised us! I think I got from several people that they thought I would be tall (for the record I am 5'3" and a quarter…the quarter makes all the difference:)).
As Sam has discussed previously as well as Sandy in this thread, meeting people in person is so much more valuable, effective, and lucrative than just meeting someone through email. Ofcourse I love email, but being able to sit down with my tech/graphics guy (Jesse Michelson), potential advertisers, and other websites has moved things forward much more quickly. I feel like I have built some great relationships.
Some key takeaways from the presentations:
- Connect with your readers on a personal and emotional level; share your life so that your readers feel apart of you, your blog, and your success
- Don't let the gazillion day to day blogging details stop you from thinking big and thinking into the future–your blog needs direction, needs to target an audience, and series are a great thing (even though it takes a lot of thought and planning to undertake a series)
- To the big bloggers (Pat Flynn, JD Roth, Ramit, Adam Baker, etc.), things like adsense and sponsored posts are peanuts compared to their own personal products they sell (courses, ebooks, video courses, etc.)
- Do something really different and you will get a lot of notice both from readers and from other bloggers (examples: Adam Baker and selling all of his belongings and moving to get out of debt, Ramit and his firing readers who he doesn't want on his blog, Pat Flynn and his transparency, etc.)
- There is a lot of misconception out there about networks of bloggers including the Yakezie; the Yakezie was not personally attacked, but two large speakers said that you are wasting your time with forums/networks and you could make a lot more impact and money elsewhere (I ofcourse do not believe this–I LOVE Yakezie:))
- If you get a bunch of bloggers together who you are sure will be 80% introverts (because they are bloggers, after all), they will, infact, socialize and have a great time!

One of the best moments was a Yakezie get together sharing pizza and talking about anything and everything (including body piercings, Star Trek and maybe a little bit about blogging).
Agreed.
Totally agree here too!
I spent $250 for airfare, $90 on registration I think, $95 for the hotel, $75 for business cards and branding, $25 on food, and $35 on the taxis…so $535 total. SO WORTH IT.
My favorite part was meeting everyone. The second was the pizza party in our room (Kay Lynn and I were roomies). The third was having lunch with JD Roth, Jesse Michelsen, Suba, and Mr. Suba on Friday. The fourth was the free drinks and hanging out at Happy Hour Saturday night. :-)
Only con: No free wifi in the rooms.
Here was my take and it has a couple of pics:
