Who was linking to you? Were they just a bunch of splogs?

A bunch of junk, really. Literally there were URL's that were jibberish. I didn't want to click on them to find out exactly what was on those sites so I left it alone.

Great to hear Jennifer and Larry!

Google's lack of transparency and whimsical ways are quite vexing!

I hate how Google docked me for something I have no control over: other sites linking back to me! Very vexing indeed!

Congrats! I'm still in PR hell, myself — got rejected twice in a row. ;) At this point I'm distracting myself with other things so it doesn't bother me as much as it used to…

Congrats. It's really hard to know what Google uses as one day those PR rank can be taken away overnight. I think for blogs who rely on private advertising, those PR drop means drop in advertising revenue as well. For some, traffic was not affected even with the drop in PR.

Congrats Little House! It's good to hear some success stories on people who have evaluated their site and made the appropriate changes.

It's likely that you may of been hit by the 'Panda Update' which targeted sites who were linking from poor, spammy sites which was the problem you had (not that is was any of your fault). Submitting a re-consideration request explaining that it was not you that built them links is a good enough reason for Google to just ignore them links, so no need for you to worry about getting them blog owner to remove them.
