Has anyone written about or know where I could go to read up on best practices for SEO? I know this is one area of my blog that could use improvement – I just don't know where to start. Of course I could Google it but thought I might save time by asking here. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Don't think you're alone !
I'm also totally rubbish at SEO
Even though I know enough to get a blog up and running, I know nothing about about what makes them work
A bit like cars, I can drive one but cant build or fix one

I would spend an hour on the Google webspam team's channel on YouTube. Worth listening to everything Matt Cutts has to say.

Lynda.com has some really great tutorials on SEO and also how to optimize using google adwords and google analytics! I've started watching a couple but I have them all qued as a playlist and are on my to do list to watch!

I had the privilege of speaking at FinCon last year where I talked about SEO Basics. Here is a link to the complete talk:

Also, the two main guys that I follow in the SEO world are Matt Cutts and Neil Patel. They are about as good as it gets when it comes to the latest in SEO.

I have a very low-budget solution that you might find instructive. I paid $5 to a Fiverr freelancer (wordpress_seo is his user name) to run a report on my start-up website Buttery Chardonnay using iBusiness Promoter software. You can evaluate one keyword or keyword phrase and compare it to the top 10 ranked Google sites for the same keyword. I got a 56-page action report that helped me make some immediate changes to my site. Very eye-opening, especially for $5.00! Good luck.
