I think it can be a great learning experience for your son, of course, with a high-level of supervision as you have planned. Can even be a way of bonding as you share this hobby/business together :) Best wishes!

Hmm, the bonding point is a good one!

Ironically, right now my 8 year old daughter and my wife are playing a duet on our keyboard.  I was thinking that my daughter learning piano lessons would make my daughter and wife (who can play the piano too) bond on a level that I won't be able to do.  But I never thought out blogging being something that my son and I would would bond at.

Thanks for making me see that potential!

I think it's a great idea. If it starts interfearing with the other important aspects of his life, then I would tone it back, but it'll be a great learning experience for him!

I hope so!  We had to scale it back already a bit.  He was only posting about once a week for a while, so I had to do a few guest posts.  Now he has the video series called "The Stickman Show" that he plans on uploading.  He estimated that those would provide at least 3 months worth of content, if he post one a week.

It's all in good fun, and he's having a blast.  It was fun to see him all excited from the additional traffic he got from the forum and the link I did on my site today to his site (I think it was around 25 visitors).  Kids :)

I think it's a great idea, since you have all the concerns covered. Go young entrepreneurs!

I actually think it's a great idea. Since you will be monitoring things, you can be a filter for him. Also, you may be able to form a closer relationship with him by taking on this project.

My friend started a blog about her daughter's illness and she plans to let her (10-year old) daughter write posts from her point of view. I think stuff like that is great!

definitely too young to blog. if your son sees how much fun you're having – drinking beer or having sex – will you help him in those areas as well? instead, i would buy him a journal – something not so public.

You're the first to hold that opinion :)

If you looked at my son's site, you'd realize that he totally anonymous and basically either does game reviews or stickman videos (which are popsicle sticks), no private information there.

I don't quite understand how you equate improving his writing and thinking skills with drinking beer and sex???  That's a pretty big jump (albeit a funny one).  But to each his (or her) own…

Thanks for casting your opinion though.  It's good to see and think from all angles when it comes to the safety of kids.

As you are closely monitoring your Son and the information he is posting on his blog, I think it is an incredible opportunity for both you and your Son to learn and share something that your Son is obviously enjoying.

I stopped by his blog the other day and left a comment.  I will be interested to read more over the coming months!

Thanks Paul :)

I hope he sticks to it, it's so easy for kids to lose interest!  But with his online business I'm backing him up, so I know he'll stick that out.  Mostly, I hope he learns and has a good times, especially with the stickman videos.

He's excited by the number of visitors that stopped by, and the positive comments!

Thanks for stopping at his site and leaving him positive feedback!  It made him pretty happy!

In order to volunteer at my son's school I had to attend Virtus training. It is a Catholic school and it is the Church's response on account of the pedophilia incidents. Part of the training discussed safety measures–for example, if there is an activity with children and the children are in one area of the building or classroom, then the doors of every other room must be locked. The rationale is that it would prevent someone being alone with a child…to stop access to children.

The video we watched interviewed pedophiles. It was eye opening. Know that someone is out there online is looking for kids who are blogging. They are not going to send pornographic messages. They are out there to build relationships…to be seen as that positive commenter, that supportive person. They will wait patiently and perhaps a couple of years down the road when your son is around 13 or so (and perhaps goes through some rebellious streak) that person will strike. When your son complains about the rules his parent "set", he will be the one siding with your child. That person will be "there" and willing to talk to your kids when your child is angry with you. Your child will trust that person since that person has been commenting for years.

I do not want anyone who I do not personally know having contact with my child.
