Got this email. What do you think?

Message Body:
Hello Barbara,

I was impressed by your cool blog content and I believe we can work together.
We have a free service you can use to increase hits on your site.

Your site can potentially get 10,000-15,000 extra visitors from MGID monthly using our news widget.

Shall I send you more details?

Regards,

Call me paranoid but I think that sounds a little too good to be true.  And you know what they say about things that are too good to be true….

What's in it for them?

Just my take on this…

mgid off late, has been trying to be more active in the blogosphere.

Here's a Q&A from Yahoo Answers

http://in.answers.yahoo.com/qu…..639AA43PYl

The accepted answer reads like an ad.  Both the poser and the guy answering joined the site on the same day, both have no other activity.

Interestingly, the same thread has another answer which appears on google cache but has been deleted including the profile of the guy who answered.

Poor astroturfing by mgid.  Stay away.

I mean no offense by this Barb, because you do have a cool site with awesome content, but the opening line: "I was impressed by your cool blog content" sounds like 80% of the spam I get in my comments.  The Beverly Hills address is sort of a tip off too, in a way.  I think Money Cone solved this riddle anyway, but those are my extra two cents.

My site must not be cool enough because I did not get an email from them.  :)

Seriously, I think I would steer clear.  If they were legit they would send you the info upfront as a cold call and not make you go back to them.

I got the email. Ignored it.

It reads like a late-night TV ad.  You can potentially get that many visitors, or you can get none.  Either way you display their widget.

Got the same exact one. Responded:

Katie,
I am always interested in mutually beneficial relationships.  I
can't imagine how installing a widget on my site is going to bring me
visitors but I am willing to hear you out.  I hope it is not just an
offer to have my post titles on your site without even a link back
(since it seems you are using redirects for these other posts).

Evan

LOL that's exactly what it was.  I told her I was out and she didn't even try to sell hard.   They need to hit up smaller blogs who don't get the game yet lol

Just got a similar note from Kathy Brown, but it said my blog except she swapped out the word "cool" with "rather popular and inspiring."

Evan, thanks for the skinny on what's happening technically. I didn't understand what she was offering and how it could benefit me. Sounds like it's a one way street.

Incidentally, there was also a blog post that had a rave review I found on it with nothing negative to say or how it worked.  It sounded very fishy and staged. Every single comment on the article was like "Yeah, I'm going to install it right now!!" or "Yes, it gave me loads of traffic."

Here was my response to MGID:

Katie,

Thank you for your offer, but at this time, I'm not interested in this type of link exchange.

I'm part of a network of personal finance bloggers called the Yakezie
and if you are ever in the position where you would like to do a
promotional campaign for a fee, please feel free to contact me or any
one of the other bloggers on the network.   Although my site does not
have a lot of advertising on it at the moment, a number of my peers have
contracts with paid for links and widgets that run anywhere from 1
month to a year in contract length.  Let me know if your business model
evolves to that point and I'd be happy to help negotiate a group rate.

I wish you the best of luck in your ventures.

I'm always curious how people deal with those.  Would you mind sharing, KNS?

I got one today. I am a "rather popular blog". But unfortunately they will be able to send upto 5000, not 15000 they promised everyone else… looks like mine is not worth sending too many people Wink

I wonder if it would benefit us…in terms of moving towards a paid position if we send her this forum thread lol?  Thoughts before I do it?
