Hi Team,
I'm struggling to get images for my blog. I thought I could do this by myself if I just took pictures of the things around me but apparently I'm not creative enough to do this… Could someone please suggest a site where I can get "free" pictures as in no payment and "no royalty"? Uh… It might sound selfish, but I don't really have cash to burn right now (site is not generating much income yet) to buy images. Would appreciate any help. All the best to the yakezie team.

stock.xchng (http://www.sxc.hu/) has some free photos, just make sure you review any restrictions before using one of the photos. I know that a lot of bloggers use Flickr as well.

I second pfincome. With Flickr make sure you pick photos with a creative commons that allows you to share on a commercial site.

I use a plugin called Photodropper. It grabs photos from flicker that are tagged as creative commons and automatically puts in the attribution. You type in a keyword and it returns matches to select from.

I mostly use a combination of stock.xchng (free) and istockphotos.com (not free). I also use the photodropper plugin but I find the selection pretty limited. Most government sites are copyright free too…I recently used a cool pic from NASA for a post on 2012.

I use the Zemanta plugin for wordpress. It grabs images based on your content and adds them in a click. It also does a great job of suggesting tags for your posts.

I have a related question. For blog, do you guys choose the Creative commons that allow commercial use or non-commercial use? If you have ads and are making money from the blog it has to be labelled for commercial use?

Suba I don't think that is considered commercial use. I think using the image in an ad would be commercial use. You aren't using an image with a Creative Commons license for the purpose of generating revenue.

I actually had a photographer email me and ask me to remove his image (or pay him $500), because he considered my site to be commercial. I was shocked, because it's just a blog and I wasn't using the image to make money.

I beg to differ. If you don't have any ads then it's not for commercial use. We put pictures in an article to get people to read it and in the process we wouldn't mind if someone clicks or signs up for something. Also we tag the photos which adds a SE element (and hopefully someone comes to the site and clicks on something while looking at the photo).

I use istock for my photos. It not free but there are a lot to choose from. There are weekly free photos and other monthly free videos. I not a bad choice if you are willing to spend a few dollars.

Uhmmm… Do you ask for permission when using flickr photos or do you just wait for the photographer to email and threaten you? Lolz.

If you use the Photodropper plugin, it will only search flickr for photos under a creative commons license. Before you choose the photo, just check the photo page to see what type of license it's under. There are some which forbid commercial use, and others that don't care. It will tell you on the photo page.

I currently use sxc.hu, but never considered using Flickr for photos. Guess I will check that out…and will make sure I am using the ones that are open to everyone, creative commons.
Thanks!

I also use istock primarily for my photos. You can normally find a coupon code on RetailMeNot for a percentage off if you prepay for credits.
