Spotting spammers in you incoming keywords

Ever wonder how spammers are able to find relevant blog posts for spamming with comments?

Well, I just saw the following incoming search term:

credit card rewards spending register login post comment

No idea if this was a person or a bot, but it's obvious that whoever/whatever it was looking for an opportunity to post comments on a specific topic (the latter terms are typically associated with blog comment submission forms).

I don't think there's not really anything actionable here (unless you want to start spamming, I guess…), but I thought it was an interesting observation all the same.

That's interesting Michael. I've seen a couple myself over the last few weeks and it looked very fishy to me.

Most of these are searching using those words because they are locating the niche and then using the words that wordpress has for comment forms.  They then use the search results to automate spam comments.  I have seen it many times before and even fought it a few years back when I worked network security.  Wordpress is the most spammed CMS platform, so you have to be careful.

Yeah, I see a lot of this. They will also search for various commenting plugins (commentluv, keywordluv, top commenters, etc) along with the keywords, so their spam comment goes even further.
