I left HostGator a couple weeks ago because I was frustrated with their slow first byte times and their affect on my site speed. so I switched to Andrea's hosting and was very happy until she started having problems and is now shutting it down. So I'm in the market for a web host again. I'm looking for something affordable (in the <$100/year range) but fast. cPanel is a must.
Who would you recommend?

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

Im in the process of leaving Hostgator too… I have a ton of accounts with them though so its easier said than done.

So far I've tried StableHost, Knownhost and Vexxhost for various sites.

StableHost – have a lot of friends who LOVE them, but so far I'm kind of mixed on them.  Their support seems good, but the speed is average… better than HG though.

Knownhost – I have a managed VPS here, their support is FANTASTIC, and the speed is awesome as well… the price isnt super cheap though (~$25 a month)

Vexxhost – I never heard of them until I saw a competitor using them and his/her site was lightning fast.  I got a package of my own and I'm amazed how fast it is. It's cheap too (~$5 a month) but their support seems a little iffy so far and it took quite a while to get my account set up unlike some places that get it done in a couple hours.  It's so fast though that I'm definitely sticking with it for now, hoping they dont let me down though!

I probably have the most expensive hosting here, but I highly recommend it.

I use Synthesis from Copyblogger.

I have had 0.000 downtime this year. It's super fast. Love it!

My site is hosted by Jonh who is building a web hosting service at the moment. He's been doing two things right – speed and security (oh, and for me all technical support).

You may wish to give him a shout on j.logsdon@quantex-research.com.

I am looking to leave hostgator as well, as their service has proved to be extremely unreliable in recent months. Thanks for the recommendations listed here. I've been with HG since I first began and I don't know anything about the other options (except to stay away from GoDaddy).

I've been using Host Gator. The support has been great for me, particularly as I migrated from blogger. They took a lot of time to make sure I understood what I was doing. I have noticed that my site is a little slow at times, but I hadn't known the source of that. Sounds like it might have something do with with Host Gator.

I use Jesse Michelsen for hosting.  He gives you all of your access info, so if the worst case scenario happens, you still can get to your site.  Plus, he's sped up my loading time from 11 seconds to under 2.  And I can text him anytime for help or if there is an issue.  My site's only been down a few times in the last year and he has taken care of it in a few hours or way less every time.

I've got bluehost. 3 times down in the past year, never for more than a few minutes. Other than that they've been great, and are pretty inexpensive.

I am happy with hostgator so far but just fyi you can do a server migration on Fiverr for … $5. I had to migrate to a new hosting plan and the guy did it in under 2 hours from payment.

I do not recommend Dreamhost. I was with them for several years and the last year was brutal with downtime (40+ times a month!) and slow speed. I switched to Bluehost a few months ago and have been very happy so far.

Hostgator is now using BlueHost's servers.  They are both owned by the same company now that Hostgator just sold out.  If you change over to bluehost, you will still have the same issues.  If you want to switch, then you will need to find a host that isn't owned by EIG.  Good luck with that as they are few and far between.

I use Bluehost. Haven't noticed a problem yet that didn't turn out to be related to my own ignorance.

InMotion hosting for me. They have some of the cheapest rates last time I looked and I haven't had any problems with downtime (there were probably 2-3 5-minute maintenance periods this year). Their customer service has been great.
