Hi folks, I'm just wondering if I'm shooting myself in the foot without my own domain (http://cruisesurfing.blogspot.com). Right now, I'm just using a blogger site. Is there much of benefit going with a domain + hosting. The way I see it, any way I can trim costs is financially prudent.
What do you guys think?

I must admit, I personally take a site much more seriously if they have their own domain. However, if you've got quality content, the readers should follow – regardless if it is self-hosted or not.

Yes, you are. If you really want to grow your blog, get your own domain name. It will save you the trouble of starting over later.

Yes, you are. You should get your domain name and move everything over this weekend! The longer you wait, the more you will regret it. I have to admit that I'm like Jaymus – I think more of a site at first glance if it's self-hosted.

Using blogger initially is a good way to experiment, but eventually you will have to get your own domain name.
What you are doing isn't necessarily wrong – there are a number of big sites that started with blogger and then moved on to their own domain. postsecret.blogspot.com is that comes to my mind. It is still hosted by blogger with it's own domain now.

At the very least get your own domain. The expense isn't too great and at least it's yours to do with.

Cruisesurfing-
First off, I agree with Craig. At the very least get your own domain for $10.
Secondly (and coincidentally), I just wrote a long post about why you should self-host this week. Enjoy!

I agree..Get your own domain, but you can still stay with Blogger. That is what I am currently doing…my site used to be mypersonalfinancejourney.blogspot.com, but I switched it and have never been sorry!
If you need any help making the change from another blogger user, please feel free to email me!

I actually started with Blogger, bought my own domain about a month after that, and then switched to Wordpress a month after that. Here's my post about the pros and cons of each: http://www.budgetinginthefunst…..wordpress/

Now my next hurdle. I went to see if cruisesurfing.com was available but someone is parking on it. So would .net suffice? or should I rebrand?

I wanted to save a couple bucks, too. I was using WordPress's free site. Nice way to test the waters and stretch your legs, but cutover ASAP! It took some time and slowed my momentum, but working through it, I have no regrets. I recently wrote a Note to Newbies, check it out when you can and Good Luck!

Funny you asked. I was originally bucksaver.wordpress.com and when I wanted to cutover, bucksaver.com was already taken. I actually prefer the .com name myself. Your call. We actually have someone using .org (http://retireby40.org) and it seems to be working for him.

I will agree with people saying go for self hosting. I started with self hosting and don't regret it for a second. At the very least, get your own domain, after you get more traffic, some random person will start a site Cruisesurfing.com or something similar and (1) get your traffic (2) ask you for money to get that domain. If you plan o earning any money at all from your site, go for self hosting. Actually, with hosting ~$5 a month, you can easily cover that cost from your website even during the first year. Go for self hosting…

@ Suba,
Looks like someone thought about registering Cruisesurfing.com just 3 months ago! Nevermind, you guys have convinced me that I should go ahead.
@ Buck
Thanks for the link, great post!
What do guys use for hosting? I was thinking of Bluehost but I see some bad reviews online. I once stupidly signed up for a 3 year super cheap contract with Webhostingpad and it was CRAP! (I ended up canceling and losing my money….)

I was using Host Monster but they STINK. I've been using Host Gator for nearly 3 months and haven't had any problems at all. I'm sure someone here has an affiliate link you could use or you could even Google "Host Gator" to see if there are any current coupon codes. :-)

I currently have accounts with both HostGator and Bluehost and I've been happy with both so far.

I've been on Bluehost for about 3 years now and I'm pretty happy with them.

You have your answer already, but I have to add another resounding YES – consider yourself shot in the foot until you have your own domain/hosting.
It doesn't have to be expensive either. If you really look you can probably find a domain for 6 bucks a year. I'm with Stablehost (amazing so far) and I only pay just over $20/YEAR on their highest shared hosting package. Granted I got a great 75% off deal for life (not just the first year).
The 75% off for life deal is probably gone forever and the 50% off for life deal may still be working. Try using coupon code WHTUS at the checkout. For the coupon to work you have to sign up for the yearly plan. This is how much their cheapest plan will cost you:
$3.95 * 12 * 50% = $23.70 ($1.98/mth)
That's pretty affordable. Now I wish I was a member of their affiliate program so I could get credit :)
EDIT: Talking about it motivated me to check into it and I guess all customers are automatically enrolled in the affiliate program so please use this link to sign up so I get credit:
