Am I shooting myself in the foot without my own domain?

After a lot of research, I just moved to HostGator this very morning.  One of the nice things is that HostGator offers their customers free transfer service, so you just supply them with the password to you old hosting account and they move the site over all on their own (any time, any day, with little-to-no-notice).  That was impressive I thought.

Basically, I went with them because they are large and reputable and cheapish.  But also because many people report no issues whatsoever when they get massice traffic spikes.  Nothing sucks worse than one of your articles "going viral" and your host shuts down your account or it simply can't handle it.

Anywho, if you do decide to go with HostGator, the following link is my affiliate link..  it'll earn me a little comission if you use it when signing up:

http://secure.hostgator.com/~a…..zedReturns

Also, since you are early – might I suggest having a look at Wordpress now as well?  I see many people going through the hassles of moving from Blogger to Wordpress after they've matured their blogs a bit..

I double checked and the WHTUS 50% off for life coupon code is still working. When you pay yearly (which you have to for the coupon discount) you also get an additional discount so you actually only end up paying $21.73/year ($1.81/mth).

I think it's a heckuva deal. Not sure how they can do it because they don't overload their servers and have great support.

I should also mention that HowToSaveMoney.ca recently got featured on a mainstream media website and received 6500 visits in one day and was still lightning fast the entire time and never went down. Haven't received any warnings from Stablehost either about too much traffic or CPU usage.

Hostgator. I like it a lot better than awful Godaddy.

.com is number 1

.net number 2

What is WHTUS and where is this coupon?

I use Dave's Network (free for me) but in time we will outgrow their free service and we need to explore other options

I was going to ask the same thing about WHTUS.

Sorry for the confusion guys. See my previous post in this same thread. WHTUS is a coupon code for Stablehost that gives you 50% for life on their host packages (as long as you subscribe for the yearly plan, not monthly). I also included my affiliate link in that previous post as well.

It is the last post on the first page.

After typing this I see that crusesurfing already said essentially the same thing ;)

I would probably change the name slightly and stick with .com myself, but I don't think it'd be a disaster to use .org…getrichslowly is a .org and seems to be working for JD! haha

Thanks for all the help guys – you've been awesome! I've purchased cruisesurfingz.com as the first (easy) step and will most probably go with Hostgator after chatting with people and reading literally 100s of reviews. The key selling point for me was that you can cancel your account at any time and you get a pro-rated refund – that shows me that they believe in their product not just a quick sale. They also have an A+ score with BBB.org.

Also I bought Thesis for WordPress as well, and it'll take me sometime to design the site the way I want it. Fingers crossed!

p.s. Jaymus, nice website. I've entered your Kindle contest!

All… I know this is an old thread, but I just read throught it.

I have my own domain (HostGator) for my static site, but I just used blogger for my blog.  I am considering putting my blog under the static domain as a menu selection.  I'm using Joomla for the static site.

I'm not internet code literate – is there some way to use Word Press or Blogger in a sub-domain of my existing domain?

I know that with HostGator you have the option to install WordPress on a subdomain (if I'm using the correct terminology). For instance, a Yakezie site http://notmadeofmoney.com/blog has a static homepage, and then WP is installed within the main domain. I'm sure someone else can explain it in the correct terms, but the answer to your question is yes.

Subdomain is the domain before the dot. In the example blog.site.com, blog is the subdomain. In site.com/blog, blog is a directory or subdirectory. You can install WP to use either.

Thanks for the explanation. I hate not having the proper terminology.

OK, here is what I ended up doing (still using Blogger to host the blog but am pointing to my own domain):

1) Went over to CPanel at Hostgator and set up a sub domain called blog.familymoneyvalues.com

2) Went over to Blogger and signed into my blog, chose Settings – Publishing

3) Read these instructions from the Blogger documentation – after clicking on Use My Own Domain:

To get started, find the control panel on your domain registrar’s website. Locate your Domain Name System (DNS) settings, and find the field for "CNAME."

Where it says Name, simply enter "www" and list ghs.google.com as the Host Name. See our detailed instructions on providing CNAMEs for various registrars. If yours isn't listed, or if you run into other difficulties, contact your registrar directly and they can help you out.

4) Headed back over to HostGator, picked up a live chat with technical support and told them what I wanted to do.  They set up the CNAME record for me.

5) Checked this morning to make sure that http://www.familymoneyvalues.b…..ogspot.com redirected over to blog.familymoneyvalues.com

Worked fine.

What I will be watching now is to see how Alexa handles all this.

Where will the Alexa rank for the blog now be?  http://www.famillymoneyvalues……ogspot.com or will it merge with my main domain http://www.familymoneyvalues.com

If any one already knows, shout it out please.  Otherwise I will update here with another post after I observe a while.
