I have discovered two plugins that can greatly improve the user experience for us spam jail inmates (at least, until they go haywire like Akismet! ;))

1) Typepad Anti-spam

This is a completely free alternative to Akismet and functions in a very similar way. No need to pay, even if you make money off of your blog!

2) Defensio Anti-Spam

This is another alternative to Akismet which is more configurable and has more features.

3) Conditional CAPTCHA

This plugin works in conjunction with Akismet or Typepad Antispam and displays a Captcha ONLY if Akismet flags the comment as spam. Instead of the reader seeing their comment disappear into a black hole, they get the chance to redeem themselves! You can control what happens to the comment depending on whether they pass or fail the captcha.

I am currently testing Typepad Anti-spam + Conditional Captcha to see if they provide a better experience for my readers. I am pleased to say that my own URL/email are NOT going into the spam, whereas they were with Akismet!

I highly recommend you guys to at least try these plugins as an alternative to Akismet, or to at LEAST install the conditional captcha so you can route false positives and actual spam to different folders.

To install, just go to your plugins page in your WordPress Dashboard and click "Add new plugin". For my fellow spam jail inmates, please feel free to come visit my site and help me test out the new configuration!

Thanks!

P.S. You can read more here, which is where I got the info: http://just-ask-kim.com/wordpr…..anti-spam/

I've already seen it in action. I have the conditional captcha setup to stick failed captchas in the trash, and to leave captchas in the spam (I can also configure it later to approve passed captchas, but this way I can mark them as "not spam" to signal the anti-spam that these comments are not spam). That way it is much easier for me to filter, and if someone fails the captcha for some reason they have feedback, which they do not have when Akismet sucks their comment into a black hole.

Some dude called "Orlando Income Tax" commented with "That was a fasinating information you posted." Typepad Antispam caught him, and the conditional captcha tossed him in the trash as he failed. So far, so good!

I can't seem to edit my post anymore?

Just want to say is that the conditional captcha can be used with Akismet, so as the first step, you can try that out. If you decide to try out typepad antispam or defensio, be sure to leave only one spam solution activated at a time.

Here are my results so far:

Typepad: No problems with regular comments; it was a little too "easy" in the beginning and put some spammy comments in my Pending folder (but never in Approved). After I marked them as spam it learned. It is a little too strict with pingbacks though and I had to fish 2 pingbacks out of the trash; though this might be an issue with the conditional recaptcha.

Let me know how things work out for you guys as well.

Thanks,

Updates:

Observations of Typepad:

Pros:

* You guys don't end up in the spam anymore!!!

Cons:

* There's a few spammy comments that end up in my moderation, and I have to manually mark them as spam.

* Most trackbacks are getting marked as spam.

For me, the ideal solution might be something like a simple test like on these forums "what is 6 + 9?" as it's easier to read than a captcha but still blocks the bots.

I installed Conditional Captcha this morning to work in conjunction with Askimet.  We'll see if the situation improves.

Let us know how this works. This might let those in spam jail (like me) comment without having to bug you in email! :)

I just installed is_human() to cut down on bot spam. You can add a simple math question to the comment form using this plugin.

That plugin caused someone to end up in the trash (at least their comment was not erased). I'm going to try wp hash cash.

I installed Conditional Captcha to use with Akismet. It has worked well so far. I'll let you know if I run into any problems.

Great, let us know how it works out!

I am  back to the always-on captcha for now (I just hate having to sift through the spam to fish out the false positives; with Akismet I get you guys in there, but with Typepad I still get pingbacks in there).

If the conditional captcha works well with Akismet, then if more people start using this it will give us a chance to get out of spam hell!

I'm another one in spam jail.  I switched my spam plug-in to bad behavior.  I do have to wade through more spam in pending but it's worth it not to miss a valid comment.

I've been testing the combination of Askimet and Conditional Captcha for a few days and so far so good.   Some good comments and trackbacks are still getting flagged but the number of false positives is greatly reduced.

Thanks for the feedback, Mike. Probably more likely for the trackbacks to get flagged since there is no way they can fill out a captcha to redeem themselves. ;)

I've always just used Spam Karma version 2.3 (http://unknowngenius.com/blog/…..pam-karma/) and even though it's not officially supported any longer, it's worked great.

Spam Karma is awesome. It kicked the pants off of Akismet and everything else, and I don't believe I ever had a single false positive.  Too bad it's no longer supported.

Akismet and Conditional Captcha are working great for me. Pingbacks show up as spam, but at least most bots are getting caught and most legitimate comments are redeemed by the captcha.

However, now I'm getting caught in spam on many sites! Also, WP-Spam Free lists me as spam as well.

I always check my spam folder when I moderate comments, I just hope other bloggers do the same.

There is such an obvious case for an entrepreneur to come in and clean house here… this has gotta be pissing off a lot of people if it affects even us to this degree.

I installed the permanent captcha because I did not want to deal with looking through comments. If I allow anything to go through it's just too much. The Conditional Captcha should help out a lot with that, too!

Right now I have permanent captcha + Typepad Antispam. This is to catch the human spammers ;)

I installed Conditional Captcha about a week ago to go along with Akismet.  So far I've pulled several trackbacks out of the trash, but I was having that problem with Akismet anyway.  Unless I've missed somebody, I haven't had to pull anybody's actual comment out of the trash, so I'm pretty happy with this combo right now.  Has anybody had comments go missing on my site in the last 5 days?
