Currently using Akismet? People ending up in spam jail? I have an update for you!

I swear, until this week I had only ever pulled maybe ONE comment out of spam!

I'm on wordpress.com, so I can't install plugins. (I hate captcha with a passion anyway.)

I am going to have to make checking the spam folder a regular task :)

Thanks for the tip. I'm certainly going to put the conditional captcha on my blog. Seems like my posts regularly go into people's spam folders.

Okay, so I've been using Akismet plus Conditional Captcha together for a few weeks now and am loving it.  I have had a few spam comments make it through to the posts but that's really easy to delete.  I think the huge benefit is that nobody seems to be ending up in spam jail except for a few pingbacks.  I rather let a few spammers through (and I mean a few, like 3-4 in 3-4 weeks) than have to look through 150 spam comments a day to fish out my friends…yay for the Akismet and Conditional Captcha combo!

That's really great to hear, Crystal. I haven't ended up in spam jail on your site in a long time, too, and it is much less frustrating for the readers when they don't see their comments just vanish into thin air!

I know, lol.  Between you and Beating the Index, I always felt like Akismet was losing me some awesome people!  This is way better.  :-)

Now we just have to spread the word so everyone else installs Conditional Captcha too.  (Lately I've been getting labeled spam too for no good reason).

I've had to send over 75 emails to bloggers asking to be taken out of spam jail in the last few weeks! This is AFTER Akismet told me that they fix the problem!! I'm hoping that everyone will install Conditional Captcha and also check their spam folders whenever they moderate comments.

The way that I choose my articles for my weekly roundups is based on the follow up emails that I get after leaving a comment – because there is no way I'll remember all of the articles that I've read. So, if I'm showing up as spam on a great article, it won't get included in my roundup because there's no reply to my comment to remind me of it.

Some of the larger sites haven't unspammed me so they probably never know when I link out to them. Just one way that Akismet is punishing me… but as I've contacted most of you in the community, it is at least less of a headache these days than it was in the past.

Well I got  response from Askimet.  Sounds like a canned response…we'll see if it does any good.

I believe it is fixed now.

Please note that Akismet is not a blacklist.  Your comments may not be
published on some blogs if the owners of those blogs have indicated
they believe them to be spam.

Remember – bloggers say "This comment is spam" and Akismet only does what blog owners say.

So the advice is to be careful where you comment

Yes, that's the same canned response they send out to everyone. The blacklist thing is wrong (if it wasn't, then what is it that they are "fixing"?). If they believe you are spam they will blacklist you from commenting on every site that runs Akismet until you beg the owner to set you free.

I pretty much got the same response from them! This is complete garbage! There are sites where I've commented a few times and once Akismet blacklisted me, I went to their spam folder. The site owners had no idea and many of them apologized for it! Plus, if it was one or two people who listed me as spam I could understand, but I'm spam on EVERY WordPress site that runs Akismet until they mark me as "not spam". That's the definition of a blacklist to me.

I never had a problem with them until I joined Yakezie!

I got the same canned Akismet response.

I added Conditional Captcha today.  Hopefully it works great.  I have been getting so much spam lately that it is hard to sift through it all.

Conditional Captcha is great. You can configure it so that all failed captchas go to Trash and passed ones remain in Spam or get auto-approved (would be cool if there was an option to put them in Pending).

It used to block pingbacks, but not anymore after I emailed the plugin author. If you set it up to leave passed captchas in Spam, then you will only have to filter maybe 5-10 comments a week in the Spam folder, and very rarely will you have to pull something out of the Trash (since these will be failed captchas!)

Agreed – it's a canned response or at least the party line anyway.  And it's absolutely ridiculous because I know for a fact that I've never had any comment I've left marked as spam on any blog.  They've always appeared until this recent problem.  So something is wrong somewhere…

I got the same canned response when I tried to get it fixed with Askimet.  I go through my pending comments at least once a day so don't worry about emailing me if you get caught (although i did change to Bad Behavior.

Its annoying to have to either contact each blog owner or hope they check their spam filter.

I had the exact same issue that came up a couple days and received the exact same response.  I don't understand why they say they're not a "blacklist."  Anyways, I've heard good things about the Conditional Captcha….it might let a little more spam through but it doesn't block out anyone that isn't spam.  Pretty frustrating and I hope they get their act together.

Anybody having Akismet problems should love Conditional Captcha.  I really don't like Captcha's in general since I rarely see them until after I hit submit since I don't scroll down far enough and then I have to rewrite my comment, BUT Conditional Captcha only pops up after Akismet is going to jail the comment anyway and allows real commenters to avoid spam jail.  I love it.

I am with Crystal.  I am LOVING the conditional captcha.  It has already saved me a ton of time not having to go through all my spam.  I can't imagine how long it must take someone who has a high-traffic blog if they don't have something like conditional captccha.

I agree! I have it set to leave correct captchas in the spam folder and send incorrect ones to the trash. I couldn't imagine relying on Akismet alone to govern a high-traffic site!
