Vangaurd Fees and bi-weekly investing

I could use some help and education.  I've been a lurker to many FI sites and have been diligently saving 30%+ of my gross salary (not including additional principal payments and accounts for short term expenses such as taxes/insurance, new car fund – likely will grow for 5+ years before needed, vacation etc.)

My question involves fees that may or may not be charged when I make investments to my mutual funds.  I make a bi-weekly investment to my taxable funds (as well as my roth IRA's).  I have funds through both Vangaurd and Fidelity.  The question then is this.  Am I hurting myself by making bi-weekly investments by being charged a fee for frequent investments?  Does it make more sense to but on a monthly, quarterly, bi-annual cycle?

I've been doing a ton of reading on the subject of index fund investing (and fund investing in general) and can't seem to find the answer to that.  What say you all?

Regards,

Bernie

Very good questions here! I'm a big fan of Vanguard, Fidelity, and passive investing with index funds in general, so I might be able to help.

The short answer is that it all depends on the specific fund you are buying in to.

If you are buying Vanguard or Fidelity's proprietary low cost index mutual funds (the ones I like to invest in), they will not have front end loads or purchase fees when purchased through your Vanguard or Fidelity account. Therefore, you can purchase on a biweekly basis with no worries.

If, on the other hand, the funds you're purchasing have set fees per transaction, you might want to limit the amount of purchasing to a monthly basis or so.

You can see the fees for specific Vanguard mutual funds by clicking on any specific fund in the link below:

Brilliant!  Thanks.  Now that I look through my holdings, I clearly see a section on the Summary page that lists fees – or in my case, lack of them.  Thanks again.

Glad to help. Yeah I think they only charge the purchase fees on very specific sub-funds, like ex-US REITs funds, etc.
