Do You Tell People How Much Money You Spent On Your Car?

If You Don't, Perhaps There's A Reason Why

Kevin and Sam recently wrote great pieces about the taboos around money and revealing how much you make.  They opened up a good discussion on why salaries are generally kept quiet and not revealed in daily conversation.  But what about how much you spent on a car? For many people a car is seen as a major income indicator.  Do the same taboos apply?

People can guess what you spent

One main difference between what you spend on a car and your salary is that people can actually see the car.  They can make an educated guess about what you paid whether you tell them or not.

Justified or not, people tend to make snap judgments based on the type of car you drive.  If you drive a high-end luxury car like a Porsche or a Mercedes assumptions are made that you have a lot of disposable income.  On the other hand, if you drive an old beater some people assume you can’t afford much more.

Of course they don’t really know whether you can afford what you drive or if you’re up to your eyeballs in debt.  But the reality is that many people see your car and assume things like how much you get paid and your financial worth. Read More

Learning From Our Past For A Better Tomorrow

2011 Yakezie Network Review And Initiatives For 2012

by in Personal Finance on Dec 31st, 2011

Someone once said, “If you’re coasting, you’re going downhill.”  I couldn’t agree more because it takes hard work to get things done.

If everybody knew nothing was impossible, there would be a lot more people working arduously towards their goals.  I’d like to think that the Yakezie Network has proved positive collaboration leads to incredible realities.

In 2011, we welcomed the Beta and Gamma class to the Yakezie family.  We also gave away over a couple thousand dollars to six very deserving Yakezie Writing Contest winners to help with their educational efforts.  Finally, we crushed our collective goal of generating more than $100,000 a month in incremental income.  Who would have known it’d be so straightforward?

If we don’t capture our past and reflect, we run the risk of running through the same motions over and over again.  Let us learn and move forward.

Why You Can’t Freelance Or Blog Full-Time

Crushing The Dreams Of Freelancers And Bloggers Everywhere

I quit my job recently.

It was done after a year-long agonizing decision period in which I went back and forth about whether to leave.  When I announced that I quit on my blog, there was an outpouring of support and a few calls for full-time blogging.  I’d love to blog full time, but there’s so much more to blogging than simply tossing up a few posts here and there every week, that while I’d love to make a go at it, I can’t blog full-time, and neither can most of you.

How To Be A Team Player And Leverage Your Network

Practice The Balance of Taking And Giving

by in Personal Finance on Dec 23rd, 2011

There are a million and one reasons to love the Yakezie, but one of the things that brings me back time and again is the vast amount of resources available on just about anything to do with Money Beagle.  Whether it be something to do with the blog itself, a topic I want to write about, a dilemma faced by a reader, there’s always somebody available that can lend an ear and offer some practical advice.

Working Together We All Win

Each person here has their particular talents, and by using each other as resources, we can collectively and individually be better and more meaningful bloggers.   Any one of us could likely set up a site on WordPress, setup a plugin to prevent comment spam, submit their posts to carnivals, or any other number of things that it takes to run a blog.  But, it doesn’t mean that we’re good at it, enjoy it, or that we’re doing it efficiently.

By leveraging other members and challengers in the Yakezie network, we can make those things happen in a way that benefits everybody.  Blogger A can set up a WordPress blog that looks OK, and take six hours to do so, or they can work with Blogger B who can set up a smooth looking, easy to navigate site in 2 hours flat.  Conversely, Blogger B can offer a wealth of services to Blogger C, who might in turn need something that Blogger A can lend a hand with.  It’s one of the best examples of teamwork I’ve seen.

Using each other as resources is key.  We have a great community in the Yakezie Forums, where I see the exchange of encouragement, information, knowledge, and services shared every single time I visit.

How To Handle Bad Customer Service

When Speaking Louder On The Phone Doesn't Work

by in Personal Finance on Dec 21st, 2011

As much as we wish nothing would ever break or get screwed up, life just doesn’t work that way. Products aren’t made to last forever, people don’t show up when they said they would, and all kinds of things go wrong with service providers all the time.

A glitch in the cable box messed up your dvr recording, the flight you paid too much for is delayed and oversold, the waitress completely forgot your order, your dry cleaning is missing when you go to pick it up, your hosting company had a server outage again, etc., etc. It can be a nightmare sometimes trying to handle bad customer service.

Passed Over For A Promotion And No Raise

Dealing With A Lack Of Motivation In The Workplace

by in Personal Finance on Dec 18th, 2011

One reason why people start hating their jobs is because they’ve been passed over for some less-than-deserving mortal.  Others start resenting their jobs because they didn’t get the raise they were expecting, despite the new hire making 20% more!  Bitterness pervades, and things go downhill quickly if the situation is not addressed.

So what happens when your manager clearly states in a meeting that you will be put up for promotion next year and next year comes and your name is not on the congratulatory firm-wide e-mail list?  Of course you go a little bezerk and storm out of the office not knowing when you’ll return, if at all.

You can fire off an angry e-mail or make a nasty phone call, but that’s not a good idea.  You might even want to take a visit to the pellet gun section at Wal-Mart, but that’s not a good idea.  Instead, breathe deeply and contemplate.  Despite your manager’s lies poor guidance, you are probably at fault.  There is a disconnect between what your manager sees in you, and what you see of yourself.  It’s called being delusional and something must change.

The ultimate responsibility is on you to have a congruent vision with your manager.

Documents You Need For Tax Time

Time To Get Organized

Right now, before tax time, is a great time to get financially organized. Why? Because it is the only time of the year that you are forced (by Uncle Sam) to find all those financial documents to report your income. I’m talking about those 1099-INT from your bank accounts, 1099-DIV from your investments, and each and every other type of form.  Beyond that, the more organized you are now, going into tax time, the easier it will be to get your taxes done quickly and efficiently.

Why You Need to Keep WordPress Up to Date

Keeping Wordpress Fast and Secure

This post comes to you from Eric at Narrow Bridge Finance. He is also the author of the amazing eBook The Personal Finance Arsenal, which teaches you how to save time, money, and headache when dealing with your finances.

On the evening of December 12th, I opened my WordPress dashboard to check out my stats for the day and plan out a few posts. I was pleasantly surprised to see that WordPress 3.3 “Sonny” was ready for WordPress sites around the world.

Having been a member of the Yakezie since the early days, I have seen many debates on the merits and risks of being an early adopter. Today, I want to explain to you why waiting to upgrade is probably a bad idea.
