Hello, I’m Roshawn, but I often go by Shawn. I write at Watson Inc. I’m in the pharmaceutical sciences, have been in college since last millennium, and know way too much about entertainment news. My foray into writing about personal finance stemmed from my frustration with my own mistakes and ignorance. Here’s my story.
Personal Development
I always have been interested in self-improvement. I find it powerful and liberating to know that if I can control myself, I can effect meaningful change in my life. I think losing 40 lbs in 10 weeks 15 years ago gave me an even stronger affinity towards personal development. Regardless, of whether it was professional or personal, I was pretty intense (hopefully I still am).
I read a lot of books, went to motivational seminars, listened to tapes and cds, etc on self-improvement. However, after I graduated professional school, I had to face an inconvenient dilemma. All this school had wreaked havoc on my finances, and I was already committed to going through more. I knew there had to be a better way to improve my finances, but I didn’t know what to do.
The Dave Years
This dilemma stimulated my interest in learning some of the mechanical aspects of personal finance. I was already motivated, but I needed the tools necessary to fix my financial position. During this period, I listened to Dave Ramsey so much that I quoted him all the time. It was “Dave says this”, and “Dave says that” continuously. To say that I was a zealot would have been a massive understatement. But the intensity worked. I committed to doing my own debt-snowball (or at least a version of it) and eliminated all my debt (excluding mortgage, and if I wasn’t moving, I would have cleaned that up too) very quickly and began to aggressively invest. During the process, some of my successes (i.e. paid off car, credit cards, student loans) gained the attention of many of my friends and acquaintances, so I decided to start writing a monthly post (similar to Joe Taxpayer).
Because I wrote so infrequently, it was very hard to build any momentum on my site. Fortunately, my friends obliged me. Some were even kind enough to allow me to sign them up for my monthly email update, so I wouldn’t have to email them my posts directly anymore :) That’s pretty much how things persisted for a while. I finally decided that I wanted to write a little more frequently, but I still did so inconsistently. I had some highs (like two post going popular on Digg within a week) and lows.
Quit Blogging
After a while though, I began to suffer from hedonic adaptation: I became acclimated with writing every week or every other week (or every three weeks). My interest was also fading because traffic and interaction on the site would wax and wane so much. Being so inept at blogging frustrated me to no end, so I seriously considered stopping. I gave myself a deadline whereby I would quit if the site didn’t meet certain goals. After all, I certainly had more than enough to do and plenty of interests, and there are plenty of great resources out there.
Yakezie
Prior to my deadline, I came across a post by Frugal Zeitgeist. I think the essence of the post was: “I already have plenty of traffic and have met the Yakezie Challenge goal, but here are some links to other bloggers in the challenge who could use your help.” I just thought that was so selfless, that I was inspired to join (mid-April). Things went well, and right before the first challenge ended (July 3rd), I decided to finally change my domain from a .blogspot.com to a custom domain.
At this time, my Alexa was ~220K, so it was kind of sad to lose the Alexa and other progress I made. Essentially, I had to “begin” the challenge again in July, except this time instead of starting from 500K (old domain), I started from 1.9 million (new domain). However, I enjoyed interacting with other bloggers so much that other things (i.e. Alexa) became secondary and tertiary. I thoroughly enjoy discussing the concepts, the challenging questions and the relationships built. I also love the diversity: there are non-financial professionals like me, financial advisers, tax experts, young bloggers, older bloggers, technical bloggers, etc. It has been a very positive experience and an education.
I am very excited about how things have been going and am optimistic about our future. It’s a fun journey that I get to take with my online buds. It’s really hard to beat that.

Wow Roshawn, I had no idea that post dragged you into this whole challenge….. I always feel my little old blog has no social influence so it makes me blush a little when I hear this kind of thing.
You sound like an all or nothing person and that can yield some awesome results it seems. I can be like that at times but I don’t think my personality is steady enough to say that is a trait of mine.
I have always enjoyed interacting with you and your blog is great so I am glad you did not stop.
I really need to promote the Yakezie on my blog more.
You have been tremendous! I really enjoy your insightful forum posts, tweets, blog posts, etc. You are very active, and I really appreciate your hard work. Thanks so much for inspiring me to take the challenge!
You have been very active in Yakezie. I really enjoy your blog and forum posts (quite insightful Google Adsense posts), tweets, etc. You led the initiative for email subscriptions to forum posts amongst other things. I thank you so much for being an inspiration.
Wow thanks :)….

Roshawn, I’m glad you decided to ditch the old blogspot domain early. Self hosting is definitely the way to go.
You’re a little furrier than I would have imagined based on your image choice. :)
Yeah, I wish I would have dumped that .blogspot domain sooner but lesson learned!
FYI: I have no involvement with that picture being chosen, but it’s nice though :)
Hi Shawn, As one of my best “blogging buddies” I was so excited to learn more about you! We have more incommon than I thought :) I bet I can go a round or two with you on the “entertainment news” front! Go E entertainment news! I was also FAT when I was younger and have kept off a major weight loss for decades! You are an amazing guy and a great pf colleague!
Thanks so much Barb. I really think that what you are doing is so awesome, you are poised to make a big difference!
With regard to Entertainment News. The problem is I’m a movie buff. I absolutely love them, so I watch Entertainment News for exclusive interviews and previews. However, the shows don’t do a good job segregating true entertainment news from tabloid fodder, so I am indirectly “forced” to learn things like whether Miley Cyrus and Liam are Splitville! LOL.
The weight loss thing is a big deal although the motivation was purely self-interest. The funny thing is now most people don’t believe me when I tell them just how much I use to weigh!
Oh, I almost forgot, does your dog really smoke a pipe? :)
I think the dog is an indirect reference to my name Dr. Watson (as in Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson)
Don’t let the highs and lows of traffic stop your awesome work!
Thanks Evan, I should clarify a little that it wasn’t just about the raw traffic that was troubling, it was the kind of traffic that also bothered me. I suffered a massive Google Penalty, from which my toolbar PR still hasn’t recovered. It frustrated me to no end because I would get backlinks but nothing seemed to shake it. Fortunately, my Google traffic has been restored and then some meaning their internal algorithm has decided to forgive me for my past transgressions! “Google if you are reading this, I am still soooo sorry. You can restore my toolbar PR anytime you get ready now!”
Interesting story on how you joined the Yakezie! Sounds like you are well on your way to completing the challenge with your new domain. Good luck!
Thanks Jeff. I completed the initial (<200K Alexa) challenge last Wednesday, but of course I won't stop there :)
I am so glad you didn’t stop because your site is one of my favorites. Your posts always make me stop and think, and they are very comprehensive. Please keep writing!
By the way, you might want to get your dog the patch…
Hey Kris,
You are just too kind. I absolutely love your site too. I probably check it out too much because the discussion on there are just so great! Thanks for the encouragement! BTW, I did try shorter posts, but it just didn’t work for my audience (people actually unsubscribed)!
Shawn –
Love the articles, they are always so thoughtful & intuitive. Glad to have you on board and enjoyed reading the history!
Thanks so much Jesse, I hope your back recovers from the injury. God speed!
Shawn, I have a few extended family members in pharma and I know just how long and challenging it can be to get through many years of school. Hang in there, it’s worth it!
Thanks so much. I am extremely grateful that this phase of my training is finally coming to an end very soon. It’s has certainly been full of interesting experiences!
Congrats on membership, Shawn!
We have similar story in that I was also inspired by Frugal Zeitgeist as well. Ian is an awesome blogger that is always there to help others to reach there goals. he has way more for me than I care to admit, but am honored to call him a friend…even if we haven’t met in person. lol
Got to love the Internet. Anyway, looking forward to developing and building with you as well. Take care and see you at the top of Alexa!
Thanks so much. I look forward to interacting with you as well. I wholeheartedly believe that creating new and strengthening old relationships is the best part of Yakezie!
Best Regards,
Thanks Freddie.
Just keep pushing man and good things will come. I’m impressed by your use of the word “tertiary” Two points for being smart!
Ha! I’ll take all of the points I can get!
Ha!,,,smart or the product of way too much school. Regardless, I’ll take all of the points I can get!
Hi Shawn,
You probably already know your site has quickly become a favorite of mine, an in such a short time :)
I’m glad your join the Yakezie group, I really enjoy the way you perfect your articles! Fact ridden and entertaining at that same time, truly a win-win!!!
I think your decision on the domain name change was excellent by the way :)
Thanks for joining, you definitely add a lot of value to the group!!!
Money Reasons,
I love your site as well. You have so much variety and insight that it’s always so interesting and fun, and we seem to be on the same journey, which is very awesome!
Shawn,
Thanks for sharing more about your background. I enjoy your posts, as they are well-thought out and particularly intellectual in content. You get readers thinking, which is cool.
You’re pretty good with Twitter, as well…and I can see you entertainment interest/knowledge come through in your site content/tweets:)
Anyway, I’m glad we’re Yakezie teammates, and I look forward to more shared learnings going forward.
Squirrelers,
Thanks so much for the compliments Ray!
Darn, my abundance of random entertainment facts come across via Twitter/blog posts, I’ll have to be more cryptic or not :) I don’t know yet. I guess I’m rather fine being different. Best Regards!
Hey Shawn, What area of pharmaceutical research are you in? Love the thoroughness of your posts! Look forward to working with you here at Yakezie!
Dr. Dean
Hey, I look forward to interacting with you too! What you are doing for nurses is awesome!
Research area: Cancer Genomics and cancer proteomics
Therapeutic area: GI oncology
You have a gift with words my friend, your intro was mesmerizing to me as I love the written word and look up to anyone that can manipulate it like you do. Ditching the blogspot was a smart move, and I see big things ahead of you.
Thanks so much! You are very kind, and I look forward to interacting with you more!
Great story Shawn. I always enjoy reading your posts.
Thanks so much Krista. I really enjoy your site as well. It’s so much lighter and refreshing :)
Ditching blogspot almost immediately for my first blog is one of the best things I ever did. Glad to have you with us Shawn.
Beating Broke,
Thanks for the welcome! Yeah I really wish I did it sooner. I think I was reticent because I really didn’t understand exactly what would happen to my existing posts upon switching. It has gotten a lot more transparent than it use to be.
Thank you for your story. I’m really excited to be a part of the challenge but was worrying that we started to late. Seeing how you had to start over in the middle of the challenge is really encouraging. Thanks for your work!
Modern Tightwad,
You are more than welcome. I don’t believe I’m incorrect in saying that there was a lot of momentum towards the beginning of the challenge that appears to be in force right now as we gear up for round number 2. I hope that the Alexa ranking will always continue to be the icing on the cake: better rankings flows naturally from better blogs, better communities, and the strong relationships built through the challenge and beyond. Cheers!
I think we have all been at the point where we consider quitting. I am glad you stuck with it. Blogging can teach you a lot more than just personal finance and web development. You sound wise beyond your years.
Narrow Bridge,
What a compliment. Thank you immensely. I look forward with getting more familiar with your site.
I discovered your blog this week from a twitter post that one of the Yakezie sent. I feel somewhat as if you are the antithesis of my blog. Your blog is very clean and focused with in-depth posts while mine, well, let’s say it’s not so organized. :) Congrats on passing 200K.
Sandy,
Different is good. I deliberately try to be different while remaining authentic. I’m sure our readers don’t want us to be clones of each other :) That’s the beauty of blogging: there’s an audience for us all. Thanks for the congrats!
That was really great of the Frugal Zeitgeist. I am glad that you continued writing despite the challenge. It seems to really be paying off.
I’m definitely glad I stuck with it too. The blogging community is great, and I’m so glad that I didn’t turn my back on it!
Hey Roshawn,
I’m glad that you came across Forest’s post and decided to join the Yakezie, and made the move to a self-hosted domain. You still don’t post all that often these days, but when you do, it’s usually a pretty great post. Your posts are the type that make me think, and I find myself wanting to comment several times because I find something new when I read the post again.
I’ve also greatly appreciated your comments and feedback on my site, and I’m glad to have you around as a fellow Yakezier and blog buddy.
Kevin, you are just so phenomenal, collaborative, and wise! You know I am such a huge fan of yours and learn a lot from you. Thanks so much for what you do! Also, feel free to comment as much as you like.
Re: post frequency: The weird part about my posting frequency is that when I blogged more, I lost subscribers even though I was busting my tail. Unfortunately, many of my subscribers just don’t think that I am interesting enough to write more frequently. It is actually quite demoralizing to think about, but several have told me (this week even) they prefer me writing less. Also, this is one of the busiest times of my life, so it’s been very hard to write more. That said, within the last 30 days I also blogged at Five Cent Nickel, Frugal Dad, Gen X finance, and Money Ning. I haven’t been as idle as it seems :)
Best Regards Bud!
Thanks for the feedback, Roshawn! I think this is probably the best part about the Yakezie: The community. I have also learned a lot from you and many of the others who have a passion for what they write.
It’s actually quite funny to say you hear that about the posting frequency, because I have been experimenting with different frequencies myself and I am wondering what is best. I’m still trying to find that sweet spot and it might be somewhere between 3 and 5 a day. My best guideline so far is to write when “I feel it”. If I don’t feel it, I will try not to force it. This is something that you mentioned as well, and I think it’s a good guideline to use!
The time factor is something to keep in mind, too (I work + have class 6 hrs a week with another 6-10hrs of work). I am probably not as busy as you because work is steady state though. Don’t feel demoralized, haha. You might have given me an idea for a post. ;)
Shawn! I can’t believe you almost quit blogging! I love reading your articles, and the way that you express your thoughts! I agree with Kevin, we need more Watson Inc posts.
When I do my roundups, I usually struggle to not just link to all of your posts and publish the article! They always lead to such good discussions.
Anyway, congratulations on cracking 200k, and building up momentum with your site. I hope we are able to work together in the future! Keep up the great work.
Khaleef, I love the sense of community that I feel when going to your site. I crave that as well. You also have some great topic selection. You truly have a genunine desire to inform whereas I tend to vent! You also leave such thoughtful comments! Thanks for all your hard work, including your contributions via commenting, and for such kind words!
Oh, and what is your profile picture? Is that a movie poster or book cover or something?
My profile pic is a movie poster of the Thomas Crown Affair. I liked the movie so much that I have written two posts about it. One was a guest post on my buddy Len Penzo’s site this August. The movie represents so much, but I love it because it is indulgent escapism. So many people tell me that the original is better, but I don’t want to see it because I enjoyed the remake so much that I doubt it can live up to my expectations.
I am thankful to Forest for inspiring you to stick with it. Like so many others, I always love reading your posts. You are a talented writer with a gift for making us think. I always appreciate your comments on my site as well.
The kind words are just overwhelming; thanks so much Joe! I enjoy PFBTB. You do a fine job mentoring the rest of us on how to retire with dignity and give back!
Shawn, I’m glad you read Forest’s post and decided to give Yakezie a try. It would sad to lose your voice in the PF blog world.
Thanks Bucksome,
That’s a very sweet thing to say. I’m proud to be a part of the PF community and humbled to think that I can make a meaningful contribution to it.
Hi Shawn, have you really been in post high school since 1999? If so, when do you plan to finish, and what do you plan to do? Would working at a place like Genentech, Pfizer and such be appealing to you? Or do you plan to teach?
Thanks for sharing your story!
Cheers
Hey Sam,
Yes, I really have been in college that long: finishing 3rd and final degree very shortly… Yes, industry is very appealing; I have no plans to become a professor (although that was my initial plan and I retain the utmost respect for the vocation). Fortunately, I have a lot of options available to me.
You’re welcome Sam. Thanks for the opportunity to share!
It’s great to hear more about you. Your intensity really comes through in your writing. I look forward to reading more of your posts, so I’m glad you decided to continue blogging. I’m curious about your education, when you finish up your 3rd degree are you changing careers, or looking for a promotion in your current career?
Thanks Little House,
It’s a change that is initially a demotion in pay but a promotion in lifestyle; it’s perhaps a little more prestigious depending on who you ask (or whether you care LOL). Long-term though, I remove certain ceilings off my career. The question I dare not answer though is whether those ceilings were real, or just perceived, to be begin with. I’m looking forward to more of your posts as well.
I love your blog. I have been following your blog ever since I did the festival of frugality. Glad you didn’t give up, we would have lost an awesome blog! You are so detail, comprehensive and logical. I look forward to reading more of your writing!
Thanks so much Suba. You are just so wonderfully creative and collaborative. I never seen a host of any carnival do the festival in such an elaborate way. It was remarkable, and I felt embarrassed by my lack of innovation when it was my turn to host the carnival of financial planning and the festival of frugality. I guess I’m wired differently in that regard.
I think you bring the same spirit to your posts. Thanks so much for you kind words.
P.S. I am sorry I bailed on the 31 days to a better blog. When the initial post went out about it, I was available, but by time everything was up and running, it was untenable with my schedule :(
Hello Shawn!
I am glad you didn’t quit blogging, but I understand your thinking (I also have many interests that I attempt to prioritize my time with).
Nice intro!
Thanks Amanda! Yes, I’m glad I didn’t bail either. I’m hoping one day I strike a different balance though (that includes blogging)

Keep it going, Shawn – you’re doing a GREAT job! I consider your blog to be a thinking man’s blog. I don’t know many personal finance bloggers that use the term “hedonic adaptation” in their articles – although I’m going to try next week. I hope I don’t sprain my brain trying. ;-)
Best,
Len
Len Penzo dot Com
Thanks Len. I try to keep it interesting and different, so thanks so much for your support and for your allowing me to guest post on your site a little while ago. Best Regards,
Shawn
I love the story about how Frugal Zeitgeist inspired you to join Yakezie and helped motivate you with your blog. I think it’s really awesome and I’m really glad you decided to stick around. Also, that weight loss is ultra impressive…says a ton about your work ethic and attitude!
Thanks Andrew. Sometimes you just need a lifeline, and I was searching. I’m also happy about the weight loss; it’s very empowering to take control of something that seemed hopeless.
That’s awesome and a great story. Clearly overcoming these obstacles has helped given you a ton of unique perspective which is really cool.
Thanks Andrew :)
You are so right, lack of readers makes it hard to stay motivated. BFS has a solid core of commenters that helps me write. My other two blogs are about a month old and have less attention so I really have to force myself to post 3-4 times a week. I’m glad you came across Forest’s post and I was able to meet you here at the Yakezie. :-)
Yeah. When I was penalized by Google which subsequently caused all my Google traffic to all but evaporate, I was very down and unmotivated. My posting frequency was very, very low. I was mostly uninspired.
BTW, I couldn’t imagine writing for so many blogs at the same time as often as you do. Where do you find the energy and time? Thanks so much for the comment!
Wait, what happened exactly again for Google to penalize u?
I guess I was naively participating in Black Hat SEO. I didn’t really understand the process, and my site was exploited and subsequently punished.
I force the energy and spend about 8 hours a day on the rest, lol. I’m lucky to have a job that doesn’t take up a full 8 hours a day and to have a husband that doesn’t mind me sticking me head into the laptop almost every evening. My posts on my other 2 blogs aren’t as detailed as the ones on BFS or my staff writer posts at Sweating the Big Stuff – that helps too. :-) The Yakezie forum has also kept me motivated and I keep learning new stuff! The pure amount of stuff I didn’t know and am still picking up is pretty amazing. I never knew that successful blogging had so much to it before I started and now I’m like an addict who needs more and more. Vacations also have helped me from burning out…so far…we’ll see, lol.
