The Birth of a BLOG
In 2008, I finally got my MBA after about 7 years! Whew, a long haul and great personal accomplishment. Then came the financial meltdown and El Carino (my hubby) said,” OK, now that you have your MBA, you should write a book.” So I said, “OK.” And I wrote about four chapters of a personal finance book (still sitting on a shelf in my office)! It was pretty good (if I do say so myself). So I put together a snappy proposal and shopped it to publishers and agents. The responses included:
” The market is saturated.”
“It doesn’t quite fit our style.”
“Do you have a ready made audience of about 12,000 potential purchasers?”
I realized that my family, friends, and Facebook contacts from high school didn’t reach anywhere near 12,000; 120 maybe.
During lunch with a former professor, she said, “Why not start a blog, you can get some readership and maybe even self-publish your book.” So I asked the next logical question, “Will it take much time?” My professor (who has no blog) responded, “Just in the beginning, afterwards, not much.”
So you can imagine the rest. I started the blog in February and a gazillion hours later, here I am.

I’m a wife, mom, portfolio manager, and adjunct MBA professor, with degrees in Economics (BS), Counseling (MS), as well as an MBA in finance. My previous jobs included real estate sales/investor, administrator & career counselor at a major university, and countless entrepreneurial ventures. I’ve traveled extensively and lived in Spain for a year. Personally, I’m quite bossy, chatty, friendly, and ambitious.
My passion is financial literacy and I want others to have access to simple, down to earth, finance information.
Please read MY STORY to learn a bit about my upbringing and the terrible poverty of my dad.
WHY I LOVE YAKEZIE
My personal style is entirely consistent with YAKEZIE. I am incredibly inclusive and value service to others. I owe much of my blogging success (from 1.2 M to 140K Alexa) to Yakezie. I think SAM must have created YAKEZIE with me in mind. :) I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to one of my earliest blogging buddies: Len Penzo. Len responded to my early questions and encouraged me to join Yakezie. Does that mean I owe him a referral fee?
MY FINANCIAL PAST & FUTURE
I am a long term investor who practices what I preach. I have managed our family’s money since before we were married. Although I haven’t been in debt, I have made plenty of poor money decisions.
My free eBook, 20 Minute Guide to Investing launched last week. Please stop by and pick up a copy.
My future plans for BarbaraFriedbergPersonalFinance include creating LOW COST proprietary products for financial wealth and success.
Thanks to all who have stopped by and commented. I hope to see all of you at my site and look forward to visiting yours. I welcome guest posts from all Yakezie members.

Great to meet you, Barb, and good to hear that you cracked the first goal of 200K Alexa. As Jay Z says, “On to the next one!” With a group like this I am sure you will get it done.
I have an MBA as well and thought that it would help me change the world. Got mine back in Dec of 2000, hung out in college for a bit as my wife finished up her MBA as well, we moved to Texas, and then the Towers fell. What a terrible time to be in the job market! I have been an entrepreneur every since.
You have an interesting road into blogging, but I am sure that others have a similar story as yours.
Question for you. How long have you been with the Yakezie group? I have been around since Oct. 4th, 2010, so it motivates me to hear how long it took people to crack the first goal of 200K.
Best of luck to you and I look forward to networking with you soon!

Hi Taylor, Great to meet you too! I joined back in the Spring (March, I think) and my Alexa ranking improved by “selflessly promoting others,” visiting their sites, commenting, a bit of guest posting. Jay Z got it right! Happy to have you one board!
I am working to do all those things. It crazy to think that in a few days my Alexa could fall so quickly. Just speaks to what a great group that we have here. I just posted a round up post on my site for Yakezie member (not showing in my RSS for some reason), check it out here: http://www.investwithpassion.com/round-up-personal-finance-friday/ , but will be sure to include you in next weeks! This was my first one.
And I am glad to be on board!
Best of luck to you!
Great to get to know you better Barb – you are quite an accomplished soul.
Your blog totally represents what you are- it is very professional! However, even though you have a strong financial background, your posts are easy to understand and apply.
Great job! I love your blog.
Barb,
Good to get to know you better. I always appreciate your upbeat style of writing, and your background shines through as you address “tricky” subjects with confidence.
Did you ever tell your former professor that blogging takes time even AFTER you get started?
Wow! You LOVE school. Great to get a little insight.
Barb, Bossy huh. And you get along with Len P. That just doesn’t compute….
Great story, and have enjoyed working with you. Look forward to a lot of Yakezie accomplishments with you and the rest of the group!
Barb, it’s great to get to know you a little better. You have a lot of knowledge and you’re definitely an asset to the Yakezie.
I downloaded your report the other day and from what I’ve read so far it’s definitely good stuff.
Great story Barb! Sounds like you definitely have it all together!
Thanks for joining Yakezie and adding such scholarly input to the yakezie snowball :)
Hey Babs, gotta love folks underestimating how much effort goes into a blog! If you’re anything like me, I’m sure it is at least the same, if not WAY more than the effort going into the ebook (which was also no easy feat).
So is your ebook the same book the publishers originally shot down? Or is that a second venture? If so any plans to pick the first one back up?
BabsFBPFBlog rocks!
@everydaytips-Thank you for saying my posts are “easy to understand;” that’s exactly what I’m going for!
@Joe-Although I’ve talked to the former prof, I haven’t had the heart to tell her that it takes quite a bit of work to run a blog!
@Myjourneytomillions-I do love school, although I think I’m done for now! :)
@Dr. Dean-Yea, I figured that I might as well let everyone know about my one “negative” trait: that I’m bossy. Just don’t tell anyone.
@Mike-Thanks for downloading the book and for checking out my “confessions” here!
@Moneyreasons-You think I’m scholarly? Great, that’s a huge compliment.
@CarNeg-I still have the book (4 chapters) on my shelf. Not sure what I will do with it!! I’m just paddling to keep up with maintaining the blog, it is definitely more than “a little time consuming.”
What I mean is when you are handling a tough topic, you can bring out the big guns and get the point across. :)
Wow Barb! Big plans – I’ll be saying, “I knew Barb back when…” someday. Great job with your successes so far, and I look forward to more from ya!
Hey Barb. I read your book the other day and it was very simple to read and understand. Thanks for the free copy!
Hi Barb! As you know, I loved your guest post and look forward to the ones in the future! Thanks for being as supportive as you are; I’m so happy to have met you through the Yakezie. :-)
@Jason-Thanks for the pump up!!!
@Charles-Glad that you enjoyed the book!
@Budgeting-Thanks for the kind words-you are also a treasured blogging buddy.
There is something about your writing style that reminds me of myself. Witty, friendly and educational while not being preachy! Good job on building a good audience in such a short time. It might have taken 7 years to get the MBA completed, but it’s taken you only a few months to crack top 200K. WTG!
Booya. Always pleasant to see you around the PF blogosphere. Look forward to more interactions and reading this book once you get it published :)
Great Intro post! I also thought that blogging doesn’t take that much time until I actually started blogging. Now it takes up almost all my time. LOL
Your father overcome a lot. It’s a very inspirational story. Your blog is great success as well. Congratulations on the meteoric rise!
That should say overcame a lot. LOL. I was typing too fast.
I have really enjoyed your blog and your inspirational posts to date, Barb! I am sure that one day you will be able to show those publishers who’s boss!
@Sandy, Wow, you are way too kind, btw, you think I’m witty? Thanks so much.
@Ninja, Actually, you were one of the earlier blogs that I read. Thanks for being there!
@Aloysa, I’m glad I’m not the only one who (hugely) underestimated the time demands of blogging!!! Fortunately, it’s fun!
@Buylikebuffet-Yes, my parents provide excellent financial role models. I’m very lucky.
@Kevin-Of course, that is my goal. Who doesn’t like to dish out some humble pie once in awhile!
Barb – I liked your intro post, and read the link you provided on how your Dad was industrious in rising above poverty. Lessons from someone who has personally done it are so valuable. Good stuff! Also, I too have an MBA (went full-time some years back), and fully enjoyed it. I’m guessing the enjoyment part might apply to you too, as you’re now teaching:)

@Squirrelers-Thanks for reading “my story” as well-yes, you are right I did enjoy my MBA!
Barb your personality is a ton of fun and I love your writing…I’m excited to continue getting to know you. It’s already been a blast working together with you so far. Your work ethic and accomplishments are really impressive!
@Andrew-I’m blushing!!!! Yes love the comraderie-here’s to a long blogging relationship-GO YAKEZIE!
Haha. You’re hilarious! Keep up the great work!
Great story. As I’m sure you know you will always have to work on the blog. When I get lazy for a month my readers decrease and traffic drops off. That is a sign I better get back to work.
Barb, you are so quirky and such a fun writer, if I didn’t know any better I would think you and Len were family :)
Your blog is one of the blogs I visit most regularly in the Yakezie network. Congrats on your successes and and keep up the good work.
-Matt from Dividend Monk
Nice to meet you Barb,
you have a very colorful background, I don’t know how you were able to gather all those diplomas! ( i wouldn’t have had the energy for more than my engineering degree)
Mich
Barb, I love your positive attitude and I would never guess you’re bossy. Me too, but I call it oldest sister syndrome.
I’m going to download that ebook. Once I’m debt-free, I’ll have money that has to be invested.
@Tightfisted-I had a feeling that was the way it was. Lucky I enjoy blogging!
@PFF-Quirky-I like it!
@Dividend-I appreciate the visits and am in line with the “dividend” mindset!
@Kay Lynn-Good luck, I know you’ll be there soon!
@Beating-Yea, I think I’m done with formal schooling for now! Although engineering is a tough one!
Great post Barb! Looking forward to getting a copy 20 Minute Guide to Investing and reading your blog.
Interesting story. I guess the bright side of them turning down your book is that we get to read your blog :)
Hi Barbara,
How long did it take for you to write your book? It’s quite an accomplishment!
Cheers, Sam
@Techbud-Looking forward to getting to know you better too.
@Jackie-How insightful. The blog is a really positive outcome of the rejection.
@Financial- It took me close to 9+ months to write a draft of 4 chapters.
@Barb I always knew you had a masterplan, and I really celebrate your success. I also appreciate the thought that you place into your endeavors. You have a very engaging and friendly writing style and are a great role model. Kind Regards,
Shawn
Amazing Barbara! Your life sounds so rich with accomplishments! (I wish I had that many letters after my name lol!)
Congrats on getting your MBA. School while being a full time working mom sounds absolutely impossible to me!
Looking forward to seeing your book on the bookshelves!
I really enjoy reading your blog, Barb, so I’m glad you decided to start one (even though the thought behind it was to eventually promote your book!) I’m definitely downloading your free ebook! I’m just beginning to see investing in my immediate future and you always give excellent advice. Thanks for sharing your story!
Great post Barb! It was nice to learn more about you. I admire your tenacity and your ability to stay focused on your goals!
@Shawn, Your continual visits, comments, and support are really appreciated. Thanks for stopping by & supporting me!
@youngand thrifty,re: getting the mba and being a mom, that is exactly why it took 7 years :)You are way too kind-I guess after hanging around and plugging away forever, it eventually pays off.
@Little house- Just start small with the investing, it’s amazing how the smallest sums can really grow with time and patience. Shoot me a question anytime.
@Dana-Thank you, I only hope that tenacity can solve most problems. Anyhow, that’s the approach I’m going for :)
@All-Thank you all for your support and I look forward to a continuing blogging relationship!
Nice introduction post Barb. I feel like I know you better:). Are you continuing to pursue your book?
Hey Barb! It’s good to get to know you a little better. I definitely enjoy your writing. You write about things that aren’t so basic, yet you still encourage great discussions!
Hope to be able to work with you in the future!
@Shawn-Your diligence and reciprocity help to inspire me! Thanks for being a great blogging buddy.
@Young-Yes, re the MBA, the family and other commitments is why it took 7 years :).
And of course, just hanging around and putting one foot in front of the other also works!
@Little House, good luck with your investing future. Enjoy the book and take your time to learn.
@Dana-Thanks for checking me out, I’m going on the belief that persistence can erradicate other deficiencies :)
@Amanda, Good question-Now, the book remains on the shelf, the blog is turning out to be a larger commitment than I initially anticiipated.
@KNS-Thanks for the props. Yes, would love to work together in the future!
@All-Thanks for taking the time to contribute to the conversation. This is what the Yakezie community is all about
Great story Barb – and congrats on the MBA! Took me over 4 yrs at night; glad that’s done! We do appreciate your inclusive nature and hope your book’s a huge success!
Hi Barb. Congrats on all of your awesome accomplishments. The story of your father is very inspiring. I really like how he incorporated the importance of savings with the reward of getting an allowance. I think that’s very smart to teach children early on that saving is rewarding in itself. A lot of adults still don’t know that
@Darwin-Congrats on your MBA as well-It’s nice when it’s over :)
@Charlie-Yes-I am a huge believer in the benefits of “delayed gratification!”
Thanks for taking the time to check out my post!

Hey Barb, you are extremely qualified!!! That is awesome. Your writing style is great and your blog offers a lot of great content and food for thought. I really hope you manage to publish that book one day.
Not picked up the guide yet but I will when I have a chance to sit down and read it.
Hi Forest-Thank you for the kind words. I just keep moving forward and figure something good will happen!!!
Chicken & the egg. So you need dedicated readers of your book before you write it? Interesting…
How did you decide on your target audience? Was it from your experience as a professor or counselor? Love the focus on financial literacy & education…since this is the new chicken/egg scenario….people who read PF blogs already like finance!
oops – meant to add “need to get this information in the hands of the people who need it most”…
@FinEngr-Your comment is so on target that it’s scary. Are you in my mind? :)
I decided on my target audience because I have a daughter who is approaching adulthood and I have compassion for that age range. I know how tough it is on so many levels when one is just starting out, and I wanted to share my “wealth building” background and experience.
I regularly hope that my blog is going further than those of us who are already interested in finance. Any ideas about how to hit those that need the info and don’t like pf?

Barb, You have a way of turning complicated topics into easy to understand/simple but yet informative posts. Hope you get that book published, it would help a lot of people. I got the investing guide but didn’t get a chance to read it till now as I was traveling. Back now and looking forward to it.
Hi Suba, Welcome back! I’m going for that: take complex topics and simplify. Glad it’s getting through!
Awwww, thanks for the shout out, Barb! I’m more than happy to help and no referral fee necessary! Just keep doing what you’re doing, Girlfriend! (I know, I just violated my no-more-than-two-successive-sentences-with-exclamation-point rule, but you’re worth it!) Dang, that’s four in a row.
Best,
Len
