Hi! I’m Mrs. Money from Ultimate Money Blog. I started my blog in January 2008 as a way to share my money saving and green living ideas. I firmly believe that when you try to save money, living green goes hand in hand.
Getting in (and out of) debt
I had never had any consumer debt until my husband decided he wanted to attend culinary school. Our gross annual income when he decided he wanted to go back to school was around $34,000 and needless to say, the student loans we took out totaled more than that at over $36,000. Luckily, we continued to live frugally and paid off that debt in three years.
Unfortunately, we also found ourselves needing a new second car when one of ours was totaled by a tree that fell on our house and car. Needless to say, neither the homeowners or auto insurance covered the replacement of our second vehicle, so we had to buy a used car and take out a car loan (which we just paid off!) Going into debt and then digging ourselves out is not something I’d like to go through again.
Living Green and Saving Money
The majority of activities that save money also help create a lower impact on the environment. Some of the weird things I do like no poo, often get strange looks from people when they hear about them, but if it helps me save money and live a better life, that’s all that matters. I love to make my own laundry detergent, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc. It is almost a hobby for me and I enjoy using things I know I’ve created.
Joining the Yakezie
I can’t remember where I first heard about the Yakezie, but when I heard about what the group believed in, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I think it’s awesome to help other people out, and I love doing everything I can to help others. As a part of the Yakezie, I’ve met a ton of awesome people, and have learned a lot about blogging and hopefully shared some insight as well. I hope my blog continues to grow and be successful, and that I can one day make a full time living blogging.
My Personal Life
I live with my husband and two dogs on our little ‘homestead’. We grow a nice garden each year, and I try to can some of the veggies each summer. I’d love to get chickens, and I think next spring they just might be in my future! I enjoy working on home renovations, and learned how to install laminate flooring, trim, and tile just from being too cheap to hire someone. Thankfully, I’m also a perfectionist, so things have turned out pretty nicely. I also enjoy simple living, and many of my blog posts reflect my desire to simplify and remove clutter from my home.
Here are some of my favorite posts:

Nice to meet you!
After saying ‘hello’, join us for further discussion in the Yakezie Forums.
Thanks for sharing your story. Good luck with the chickens-fresh eggs are a good thing!
Dr Dean- Thanks! I can’t wait for the chickens!
Did I miss something? Your husband agreed to the chickens?!
Hi Mrs Money,
Your blog was one of the first PF blogs I started reading. I love that you put your money where your mouth is and follow the advice you give in your writing.
I’m far too lazy to make my own toothpaste or soap, but I give you credit for doing so!
Aww thanks is sweet! Thanks so much for your kind words. :)
Hi Mrs. Money,
Thanks for sharing a little bit about yourself with us. Paying off 36k in three years is a challenge so hats off to you!
I stopped by your blog and subscribed to your RSS – keep it up!
Tim
Thanks so much!
Hi Mrs Money,
Great intro post. That’s very cool that your husband went to culinary school. That’s always something that I wanted to look into, but I dont think I ever will. I like your green tips as well, and I think the yakezie has quite a group of bloggers interested in saving money and being green (you, myself, little house, etc).
Its awesome that you have a homestead, I’d like to get one in a few years. They dont cost that much here (home + 25 acres = 125k or so), I just am working to get out of debt first. Good luck with your chickens!
Jeff
Jeff-I should have clarified. Our “homestead” is less than an acre. :) We do what we can with it, though!
I appreciate you sharing your story- you help make the Yakezie better. Great job on paying the student loan and car loan so quickly!
Elle- Thanks so much!
Mrs Money, your own private chef? I’d say every penny of that 36k was worth it!
While I can’t say that I have the will power to make my own toilettrees and such, my hat is off to you for not just talking the talk, but walking the walk as well. And if you enjoy it, that makes it all the better!
LOL That is too funny. He works too much to be my private chef! ;) But it is awesome when he does cook!
I did a double take in reading your post – you have a stance on “no poo”? I had to think a second to realize what that meant! haha.. In any event, thanks for sharing a bit about you and your family, and your desire to get chickens! And good luck with the no poo! :)
Haha, no poo means no shampoo, and you use baking soda to wash your hair!
That’s funny! I was confused by that “no poo” thing too. I thought you decided to just not, well, go poo. I briefly considered supporting you by taking a similar pledge – but I thought better of it. LOL

I am happy you get to share your story! While I am not, nor I try to be, the greenest person its cool to read some of the stuff you do.
Thanks, Evan!
Looking forward to reading you blog. Thanks for sharing.
your blog that is. :)
Thank you!
Despite my not-as-green lifestyle, I’ve always enjoyed your blog! I think you would have gotten more clicks if you mentioned your post on solar powered sex toys though, lol. Great intro!
Crystal, good point! LOL I should have linked to that one. You are so funny ;)
Great story. I also was sitting in the $40,000 range with student loans with a car loan too. Car loan is clear and less than $13,000 left on the student loans (goal is to pay off in 2 years). I love reading stories from people who have done what I am doing right now.
Narrow Bridge- You can do it! It will be awesome when you get it paid off!
Great Intro post and interesting story behind the blog. I am not into making my own shampoos and toothpaste but I would love one day to have my own garden. :-)
That’s one of my favorite things- to have a garden!
You are definitely living proof that living “cleaner” is also good for your bank account! I think it’s great that you blasted your debt twice!
I look forward to reading more of your posts and working together!
Thanks so much for your kind comments!
I’ve been a long-time reader of your blog and enjoy reading the environmental recipes you share for laundry detergent and dish-washer detergent (I still need to try that recipe you posted!) I agree that frugal living and living “more green” go hand and hand – it’s good for the environment and for the pocket book. I’m looking forward to reading about your experiences with raising chickens next summer. ;)
Thanks so much for your kind comments! I’m excited for it too. I think we have both have a lot of the same values :)
So you live with a chef now? Nice! Sucks that the insurance companies didn’t cover the damage… makes me wonder why we pay insurance in the first place if they will find an excuse to get out of paying when the time comes.
Sometimes I’d like to live the homestead lifestyle, too, with some chickens and a vegetable garden. They might be changing the laws sometime to allow chickens in suburban backyards. That would be interesting!
I do live with a chef. It’s not as luxurious as you think though! ;)
Very nice intro! Have you reaped the benefits of culinary school at home? That would be wonderful.
It is great that you have found a way to have a hobby that you believe in. (Making your own toothpaste and such.) Doing what you love is a great thing.
Enjoy those chickens. I don’t think I have ever had a fresh egg, I am envious!
It’s awesome when my husband cooks! I can’t cook very well at all…
Great member post! I’m envious of your homestead lifestyle and will definitely look forward to the “chicken” posts in the near future.
Thanks so much!
xoxo
Hello Mrs. Money,
You are really taking things back to the basics (making your own shampoo, toothpaste). Those are great skills to have. I will be sure to check out your post. Very interesting intro post!
Thanks! I feel good about doing all those things. It’s fun to do too!
I really like my homemade laundry detergent but haven’t ventured into homemade toothpaste. What do you use for that?
http://ultimatemoneyblog.com/make-your-own-recipe-collection Here’s my collection of recipes! There are a couple of recipes there!
I’d love to be married to a chef. Maybe not. I’d blow my money on gourmet food and be round as Santa. Then I’d have another problem to blog about.
Haha, it can go either way!
Haha, as everyone else said, you could argue the tuition was well worth it to make your husband an expert chef for you! But seriously, that’s a ton of debt along with the unfortunate car incident. You’ve clearly been in some big-time debt but it’s really impressive how you’ve been able to claw your way back. Awesome stuff!
Thanks! It has worked out well for him!
no poo? sounds painful. :D
Great job on paying off the debt!
haha- it’s where you use baking soda as shampoo!
I think you are right, there is definitely frugality and being green, do hand in hand on many issues…. For instance, a Navy shower is a great way to save money and water at the same time!
I’m glad you joined too, it’s great to have so many distinct flavors of personal finance bloggers in the group! :)
Thanks! It’s a lot of fun too :)
Thanks for sharing your story and welcome to Yakezie
To pay off $36,000 in 3 years with gross income of $34,000 is amazing! I don’t know how you did that! Even if that was your net income, it’s quite unbelievable. Did you live in your car to do that??
LOL we were very frugal and used some money we had in savings too ;)
Thanks, all! I should clarify- our “homestead” is a little less than an acre, but we make do with what we have! :)
Thank you! :)
Thanks!!
Nice intro and you seem to have things handled pretty well. I do no poo now and I think I heard about it on your blog first of all…. I do it Ghetto style though with pure baking soda and it works fine! Apple cider vinegar is a fine conditioner.
Mrs Money, I’m a big fan of your blog even though I don’t always want to go as far in frugality/going green. You connect with the readers and your kindness comes through in your writing. I’m glad you’re in the Yakezie!
You know, Mrs. Money, my son wants to go to culinary school too – and I really thought I was getting off cheap. Now I know better!
Best,
Len

Okay wow–you and I have lots in common! I will definitely need to check out your website. I love eco-thrift! I am also an environmental investigator.
Cool you have chickens! Our city (Vancouver) recently allowed people to have back yard chickens :) Good to know where your food comes from :)
Thanks for sharing your story :)
Wow, what an accomplishment.
Our city just let us have backyard chickens last month…. not sure that the homeowners’ association is going to go along with that though!
I’m really curious as to where all these cartoon gravatars come from. Is there a website that cartoonizes a picture of you?
ninja- if you’re looking for gravatars, 99designs.com is a cool social way to get a bunch of designs.
