Hate Your Job? Maybe You’re Not The Only One

The Responsibility To Find What You Want To Do

by in Personal Finance on Jun 17th, 2011

The steam playfully rose into the night air, obscuring my vision of a girl in a bikini walking towards me.  I casually brushed away the mist to get a better look before she got into the outdoor hot tub where I had been relaxing for the past ten minutes.  Wow, she’s tan and fit, I thought to myself.  Who is so tan in San Francisco with winter just ending?  I had to find out her story.

Stacy is 29 years old and had just returned from a 6 week surfing trip to Costa Rica.  Right before the holidays she was laid off from Billabong, an Australian action apparel company.  She worked as a designer for them for 6 years right after Brown University.  At Brown, she was a straight-A student and always believed in doing her best, no matter what the challenge.  With this guiding principle, she sought to be the best designer possible at one of her favorite clothing lines.

Are You Frugal or Cheap?

When Does Saving Money Go Too Far?

Reader Beware: If you make your own soap or buy single-ply toilet paper, please don’t take offense to the following. Everyone has their own standards of living and this post just reflects mine.

What’s the difference between being frugal and cheap?  For me being frugal is the willingness to spend, but the smarts to make good decisions and get a deal when it counts.  Whereas being cheap is an avoidance of spending and trying blindly to save money on absolutely everything.  A frugal person will make smart decisions based on value and quality.  On the flip side, a cheapskate will be willing to sacrifice quality in order to save a few dollars, often times making themselves or others suffer in the process.

For example:

  • If you drive 30 minutes out of your way to save 5 cents a gallon on gas you’re probably CHEAP.
  • If you buy a car with a higher fuel-efficiency you’re probably FRUGAL. Read More

There's Millions Out There Looking For A Home!

According to the Project on Student Debt,  the average amount of student loan debt a student accumulated by graduation in 2009 was $24,000. Though this figure doesn’t seem exceedingly high, it is only an average. For comparison standards, averaging student loan debt at $24,000 could mean that for each student who kept their debt under $5,000, there was one who applied for student loans totaling over $45,000. Not to mention that the weak job market won’t help students pay off that debt anytime soon. Read More

In order to write well you have to experience life—the pains, the joys, the triumphs and periodic bursts of energy about being alive all provide great fodder for your writing. Passions, curiosities, and satisfying both will give you numerous and infinite article ideas. Traveling whether near your home or in other countries and observing people at coffee shops, in shopping malls, or on the streets will ignite questions that lead you down paths you never thought existed. Let The Voting Begin For The CarInsuranceCompanies.com Yakezie Writing Contest!

The Third Yakezie Writing Contest

by in Writing Contest on Jun 1st, 2011

UPDATE: Click here to see the essays, a new one published every other day over the next two weeks.

We’re pleased to announce the nine finalists of the CarInsuranceCompanies.com Yakezie Writing Contest, which is also co-sponsored by Prosper.com.  Thanks to the collective pledges of our Members and friends, we’ve raised $1,150 to be split 60/30/10 to the three winners: 1st: $690, 2nd: $345, 3rd: $115.

Interesting to note that unlike the second round, our writing contest was not listed on FastWeb.com.  Our contact was gone for a two week period, and when she returned, she mentioned that Fastweb has a policy of charging for sponsored scholarships, but she never got back to us on what that fee was.  After several follow-ups and no responses, accompanied with a steady influx of 30 essay applications, we decided to move on and re-strategize our outreach for the next contest. Are You Stuck In A Rut?

Only Boring People Get Bored

by in Lifestyle on May 28th, 2011

Life is an interesting mix of phases.  You are born, you hopefully have a great childhood where you can run free and have no worries.  You go to college, get married, maybe have some kids, and then retire at some point down the road.

Each phase in life has its own ups and downs, some of which are out of your control and cannot be planned for.  If you are lucky, you sail through all phases of life with happiness, joy, fulfillment, and realized dreams.  However, life is rarely just sunshine and roses.  At some point, at the very least, life can sometimes seem just plain boring.  I know that as great as my life has been thus far, I have experienced some less-than-fulfilling times in my life.   Let me explain…

Life After Google AdSense – What To Do If You’ve Been Banned

All Pray To The Google Monopoly

by in Lifestyle on May 26th, 2011

When I started blogging, I never intended it to be a huge source of income for me.  But, like any other website, I had costs that I wanted to cover.  The most common way to generate a little bit of money was to use Google AdSense.  I was so excited to make $0.03 a day for my work, because it was something – which is better than nothing!

Then, about 6 months ago I was banned from Google Adsense.  Why?  I, to this day, have no idea.  I received an extremely generic email from Google that read: Read More

To Conform Or Not To Conform, Your Life Is Your Own

Don't Be Afraid To Do What You Want To Do

by in Lifestyle on May 22nd, 2011

Last year, I had the opportunity to pound back a couple beers with Leo Babauta from Zen Habits, Maren Kate from Escaping The Nine To Five, and Everett Bogue from Far Beyond The Stars.  I even got to grab a bite to eat with Srini Rao from Blogcast FM in San Francisco before he headed off to Costa Rica.  All of them are very special in their own way because each of them has a unique story to tell. They are all nonconformists who make a living doing what they want to do.

It was a school night for me (work the next day that is), but I decided to go anyway to this dive-bar in the Mission to meet these colorful personalities. You could smell the aroma of beer-stained wood floors as a bunch of folks gathered in the back. Ahh, my first meet up. In true journal writing form, I jotted our beer-hazed discussions down in order to share them below with all of you.
