Yakezie Member Post: Retire By 40

Why does he want to retire so early?

by in Personal Finance on Mar 7th, 2011

Hello fellow Yakezie members, challengers, and friends,

This is Joe from Retire By 40 where I blog about my journey to early retirement. Today, I want to write a bit about the person most influential to my goal. His name is Will and he can never work for anyone else for long. He always goes his own way no matter what anyone thinks and here is a bit of his story.

Book Review & Giveaway: Enchantment by Guy Kawasaki

Enchantment by Guy Kawasaki

A book review by Dr Dean Burke (@DrDeanBurke) from  The Millionaire Nurse Blog

I was excited to get a review copy of Guy Kawasaki’s newest book, Enchantment.  The book is being released March 8th.

I have been getting his tweets @GuyKawasaki for some time, and knew he had varied interests. And have heard him interviewed and read about him at Success Magazine.

A little about Guy’s background:

He was born in Hawaii, and went to school at Stanford.  He learned to sell in the jewelry business, and was hired by Apple Computers early in his career. At Apple, he developed his chops in “Evangelism” with sales and marketing!

Since his Apple departure, he has been involved in many aspects of the tech world and venture capital.

The VC folks loan  money for a stake in a small company-taking huge risks for even huger (yes I made that up) rewards!

He is also the co-founder of Alltop.com-you’ve seen those ubiquitous Alltop badges- and Enchantment is his tenth book!  Note: He was also offered a position as the CEO of Yahoo when it was still under a couple billion market cap and turned it down.

Keeping Personal Finances Green

by in Personal Finance on Mar 4th, 2011

Greetings!  I am Sustainable PF and together with my wonderful wife Mrs. SPF we write at Sustainable Personal Finance where we discuss balancing our financial goals with our lifestyle and beliefs regarding sustainable living in Ontario, Canada.  Mrs. SPF and I were married just under a year and a half ago.  We had a number of goals we wanted to accomplish which included importing a car from the United States, fixing up and selling the house I bought prior to meeting Mrs. SPF, finding a home together and buying it, and last but not least, get our finances in order.  In retrospect we should have dealt with our finances first. Never Taking Anything For Granted

by in Featured on Feb 28th, 2011

Hi. This is Sandy L from First Gen American. I want to start by saying how excited I am to become an official member of Yakezie.   Although I’ve on only been blogging since July of 2010, I have been commenting on blogs for quite a long time.  I have a soft spot for personal finance blogs, so finding such a great group of bloggers through Yakezie was like hitting the jackpot.

About First Gen

In case you’re wondering about my background, here’s a very brief bio. I have a BS in Chemical Engineering and I’m currently working full time as a technical sales rep for a large global chemical company. Over the last 15 years, I’ve done a variety of roles in Product Management, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Marketing, Technology and Supply Chain for a Fortune 100 company.  As a result, I can be pretty opinionated about a variety of topics.

With regards to my personal life, I am 37 and married with two children (ages 5 and 2). We live in the Berkshires in MA. My husband also works full time as an engineer.  He’s great and I don’t know how we’d be able to juggle 2 careers and a family if he wasn’t so hands on, fun loving and hard working.  I’m a serial learner and I always have some side project going at all times. Currently that project is blogging. In the past most of my side interests have been practical in nature such as home improvement, gardening, cooking, etc.

Life Happens Along The Way

by in Featured on Feb 27th, 2011

Hi, my name is Jason and I’m a personal finance junkie.  I also run Live Real, Now.

In October, 2007, when we found out that my wife was pregnant for the 3rd time, I panicked.   Every month, we tapped into our overdraft protection account, at least once, at 21% interest.  Our credit cards kept growing, and we couldn’t make ends meet.  Now, we were going to have another kid in diapers, another kid in daycare, another kid?  How did that happen so fast?

Kid #2 took years to show up.  We were counting on a bit more time to save some money and maybe potty-train kid #2. Sometimes, life comes up like a kick in the gut. Seriously, I love all of my kids, but this is one time that it would have been nice for kid #3 to defy us like her sister did and does.

It was time for a reality check. Read More

Yakezie Member Post: The Amateur Financier

Hello, my friends! I’m Roger, the proud (and slightly crazy) writer and creator of The Amateur Financier blog. Go ahead, feel free to check it out; I’ll wait.

Are you back? Great! As you can see, I’ve been blogging for nearly two years now, and I’ve written nearly five hundred posts in that time. But I wasn’t always an eager, semi-successful personal finance blogger; in mid-2008, in fact, I was pretty oblivious to the issue of managing my personal finances in general.  I was working at a reasonable paying job, earning a healthy income, saved most of it, and even invested some in the 401(k) plan being offered.

I only invested 5% of my income into my 401k, and all of it was dumped into a stable value fund.  I wasn’t very knowledgeable about personal finance or managing money at that point. What changed, you ask? Well…

by in Featured on Feb 19th, 2011

My name is Kelly Whalen, and I’m the mom behind the Centsible Life where I write about family, finances and fulfilling your dreams on a budget.

Mainly I’m a mom to 4 adorable rascal (2 boy and 2 girls) but I manage to squeeze in a mean social media addiction, writing, and consulting in between tackling the Mount Everest sized laundry pile and reading bedtime stories to the kids. Read More
