Book Review of David Bach’s Debt Free for Life

Three Free Books To Giveaway!

by in Personal Finance on Feb 18th, 2011

Beating Broke is a blog about living a life that aims to be free of debt, and the journey of getting there.  You can drop by the Beating Broke blog to read an interview with Debt Free for Life author, David Bach, as well as a review of the DebtWise.com debt reduction tool.

If you’re reading this, there is a very good chance that you know the name David Bach.  You very likely have read one of his “Finish Rich” books.  Many of those books focus on helping take control of your finances, create a system to make it almost automatic, and then execute it in order to become “rich”.

Debt Free for Life is closely aligned with those other books, but is aimed more towards those that are on the brink of financial disaster.  In the course of reading the book, Bach leads us through a mini course in debt, how we get in debt, how we stay in debt, and then the different methods and tools that we may need to get out of that debt and stay out.

The Importance of Income Diversification

We always hear financial experts advising us to diversify our investments to minimize risk, but how come no one ever talks about diversifying income?

Developing multiple streams of income can help protect you from the threat of job loss.  Think about it.  If one-hundred percent of your income comes from one source, what happens if that source suddenly dries up?

You might think your job is secure but unemployment rates say otherwise.  Being a top-performer won’t protect you from layoffs if your company decides they can save money by outsourcing your job to India.  Or what if your company goes out of business?  Or a competitor buys them out and takes a hatchet to your department?  There are any number of reasons you could find yourself out of work and many of them are completely out of your control.

If that happens, you’ll be glad you were wise enough to diversify your income.  Even if it only partially replaces your lost salary, it may be enough to keep food on the table until you’re able to get back on your feet.

Interview With Problogger Author Chris Garrett

by in Personal Finance on Feb 14th, 2011

I’ve been blogging at Wealth Pilgrim for almost 2 years. When I started, I didn’t even know what a blog was or why I should do it. At the time, I was writing a book and my publicist told me I should create a blog to support the book. Once I agreed to do it, I started reading everything I could find on the subject and luckily discovered ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income by Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett.

The book really inspired me but I had questions. I hunted down the authors and tried to hire them to coach me. Fortunately, Chris Garrett agreed to do it and became an invaluable resource. I twisted his arm and Chris agreed to do an interview for Yakezie to share his knowledge with the network. Read More

Financial Stages For Young People

If you’ve done much financial reading, you’ve probably encountered a lifetime guide to your money.  It’s a popular feature of many money magazines, writing about the career goals and types of investments you should have at various stages of your life, and showing how they change as you get older.  It’s very helpful information to have, and arranging the information in time-line form makes it pretty easy to follow.

There’s just one problem: the youngest age usually given is typically in the thirties (sometimes even in the forties).  While that might be understandable, given their prime demographics, it still leaves younger people in a lurch.  How can you start handling money and career if most sources of advice assume that only your parents or people their age actually care about their finances? Let The Second Yakezie Writing Contest Begin!

Keeping Things Interactive

by in Writing Contest on Feb 6th, 2011

The second Yakezie Writing Contest (YWC) voting is now live!  Over the past 10 days, 11 Yakezie Writing Contest Committee (YWCC) members have gone through 1,049 essays to select the Top 60 finalists to be published on the Yakezie.com homepage.  It’s taken an enormous amount of teamwork and it was certainly not easy to select only 60 essays out of over 1,000.

Chris (Webmaster) created a brilliant system that allowed each committee member to log on simultaneously and vote on a random essay.  The system ensured maximum efficiency and fairness.  Each of us used a rubric (essay guideline) to help us select the essays.  From there, we made our own individual decisions.  Once we reviewed all 1,049 essay, we then reviewed the final list of 95 “yeses” down to 60.  If you are one of the 60 finalists, you will get an e-mail from us requesting a picture or added bio before February 11th.  To vote, simple click the Writing Contest tab and begin! Confessions Of A Blogoholic

by in Lifestyle on Feb 4th, 2011

I love blogging.  I love blogging so much that sometimes I forget to eat dinner because I’m busy responding to comments, writing posts, and socializing online with friends. If I was a high school student again, I think my parents would worry about my health and offline social life. I can hear my father now, “Sam, how about going outside and meeting some nice girl or something?”

We have three main verticals on Yakezie.com: Personal Finance, Lifestyle, and Writing Contest.  What I’ve come to realize is that we might very well be missing one of the most important verticals… Blogging!  After all, the Yakezie Network is a network of bloggers who are all trying to figure out how to improve our respective sites.

Writing is a lot about self-reflection.  How do I feel about this situation?  Why do things happen the way they do?  Will I ever be able to get ahead?  I think about things constantly and if I didn’t put anything down in writing, I’d miss out on so many things because thoughts come and go in a flash.

One evening, I was reflecting on whether or not I have become a blogging addict.  Spending an extra 20-30 hours a week in front of the computer seems kind of excessive frankly.  I want to make sure that I won’t be checking into rehab soon and came up with a list to check my pulse.  Won’t you have a look and share your thoughts?

by in Writing Contest on Jan 24th, 2011

Dear Applicants,

Thanks to all who followed instructions and applied for our second Yakezie Writing Contest.  We received well over 1,000 submissions and it will take at least a couple weeks to get through them all to select the finalists to be published and voted on.  Given the number of submissions exceeded our expectations by 10-fold, we plan on increasing the number of finalists to be published from 30 essays to 60 essays.  We will publish two essays a day for 30 days and allow readers to vote on each up to one week after the last two essays are published.

The Yakezie Network has pledged $600 for first place, $300 for second place, and $100 for third place.  In order to stay up to date with the contest schedule, we ask that you subscribe to our RSS feed and Follow us on Twitter if you have an account. There is so much interest that it is impossible for us to respond to every e-mail.  Following Yakezie.com through an RSS feed and Twitter is the best way to keep in touch.  By following us, you will always be updated with what’s going on and also receive a rich source of personal finance and lifestyle content from the Yakezie community.
