Do You Really Want To Know How Much Others Make?

Careful What You Wish For

by in Personal Finance on Dec 12th, 2011

In Western society, we tend to be so secretive about how much money we make at work and at our other endeavours. Talking about money is taboo, in part because relationships can change and people can act funny once they know the truth.

It can be tricky to know when you can talk about how much you make. However, this taboo is not a world-wide phenomenon.  Westerners often encounter culture shock when traveling to Asia, whether for business or pleasure, and one of the differences between Asian culture and Western culture is that Asians have no taboos about discussing monthly or yearly salaries!

What if money was not a taboo in Western culture? Would we have a better relationship with money, with our finances, and with each other? Read More

How To Raise A Financially Responsible Child

So Much To Teach In So Little Time

The amount of personal debt in society today is staggering; the number of people struggling to keep their heads above water is alarming. Children imitate what they observe and will follow the example set by their parents in financial matters. It is vital that parents learn how to raise a financially responsible child.

Society has become obsessed with possessions and instant gratification. Our grandparents used to save for what they wanted, our parents learned that credit could help fill in financial gaps while the current generation of young people is amassing personal debt at an alarming rate.

The Best Time To Work To Maximize Your Profits And Career

Think And Do Things A Little Differently Would Ya!

It always perplexes me why everybody tries to get off of work at 5pm.  Traffic is backed up and tempers flare for those looking to escape San Francisco.  It could literally take 30 minutes just to get onto the Bay Bridge at 5pm.  Meanwhile, if you left at 4pm or stayed a little later until 6:30pm, your 1 hour commute might take just 25 minutes and you’ll be much less stressed in the process!

The same thing goes for the morning commute.  If you try and get on my bus at 7:30am, it’s a disaster since everybody tries to get to work by 8am.  Bus after bus will pass me by unless I walk at least 4 blocks closer to the beginning of the line to beat the crowds.  After some trial and error, I decided that just taking a bus 12 minutes earlier at 7:18am always guaranteed me a seat and never a butt in the face!

Given that the easiest way to get paid and promoted is to come into work before everyone else, and if possible, also leave after everyone else, your morning and evening commute is all the more important.  In fact, a desire for a financially better life will actually make you less stressed and more productive because you are coming in earlier and/or leaving later when there’s no traffic!  What a pleasant combo.

Feel Stupid Sometimes? Me Too And I Hate It!

There Are No Dumb Questions, Only Unasked Ones

by in Lifestyle on Dec 2nd, 2011

I hate feeling stupid.  It drives me absolutely up the wall when I can’t figure out how to put the proper coding into my website for example.  I feel so lost when I don’t understand what all my fellow online friends are talking about when they speak in acronyms.  You know like, “What’s your CMS?”  Huh?  You want some Cold Meat Salami?  Let me go check the fridgerator, be right back.

Of course the coder isn’t asking me for my salami.  That’s just silly, unless he was a she, then maybe it might make more sense and be more acceptable.  Whuh? He’s asking about what my Content Management System is.  Ahhhhhhhhhhh, OK!  Still, what the hell is that?  I just use WordPress for my blog.  Ain’t that good enough?  Why speak in code?  I feel dumb.

Controlling Spending The Fun And Easy Way

Making Sure You Don't Go Overboard This Holiday Season!

by in Personal Finance on Nov 25th, 2011

With holidays sales galore, it’s very easy to go overboard on spending.  You work so hard saving your money all year only to blow it on some trendy tickle me Elmo doll that goes unplayed just a month later.  Computer gadgets seem to be particularly popular as companies such as Apple discount their Macbook Airs by an uninspiring $100 dollars, and their iPad 2s by an even more unexciting $50 dollars off.

I’ve got a perfectly healthy 3.5 year old Macbook with 4 gigs of RAM and a 120 gig hard drive.  Even though I just spent $29 to upgrade my OS to Snow Leapard to improve the operability of my computer last week, I still almost couldn’t help but buy a MacBook Pro for $100 off!  Shopping is like crack where one saves more if they buy more.

Recognizing I have a problem with spending, I wrote out a list of things I wanted to buy: socks, shoes, cards, ties, toys for the kids, Macbook Pro, 40″ LED TV, round-trip to Hawaii, and a 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo in black.  You know, the usual list of things every minimalist needs to have.  Hey, gotta throw something really sweat in there right?  Adding up the items excluding the Porsche, came out to a not cheap $3,500.  Yikes!  That’s a lot to spend in one weekend.

Gain Time And Money Through Outsourcing And Trade

Specialize In What You Are Good At, Outsource The Rest

by in Lifestyle on Nov 23rd, 2011

When I started out blogging, I was taking care of everything myself. I was writing 2-3 posts a week, submitting to carnivals, writing up weekend editions, guest posts, hosting carnivals, etc…. I was working a full-time job, and I had school on the side for at least half of the time, so the bit of time I had left was split in many different ways.

There’ve been a few points when I nearly approached burnout in my short blogging career. I remember seeing the visitor count and subscriber count stay stagnant, day after day, and I remember being stuck at PR 0 for the longest time when Google wasn’t making updates! It was a little frustrating to see, and I wondered why I was spending so much time on something that didn’t seem to be going anywhere.

One of the reasons I was approaching burnout is because I simply had too many tasks on my plate. There are parts of blogging that I really enjoy, such as writing and interacting with the readers, but I’ll be honest with you: I’d rather listen to screeching nails on a blackboard than submit my posts to a bunch of carnivals, week after week after week. I simply find it a chore, and it’s when you don’t enjoy something that you are at risk of burnout.
